General Definition of Work
The Director of Transportation is responsible for the overall leadership, coordination, and supervision of the school district’s transportation services. This includes ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation of students in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and district policies. The Director will oversee routing, vehicle maintenance, driver supervision, compliance, budgeting, school bus safety, accident investigation, and strategic planning to support the educational mission of the school district.

Essential Functions
Plan, develop, and direct a comprehensive transportation program for the district, including daily routes, field trips, athletic events, and other district-sponsored travel.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations governing school transportation, including safety standards, driver certifications, and vehicle inspections.
Hire, train, evaluate, and supervise transportation department personnel, including drivers, mechanics, and administrative staff.
Develop and manage the transportation budget, including cost control strategies, procurement, fuel usage, and vehicle replacement planning.
Monitor routing software and GPS tracking systems to improve efficiency and respond to changing student enrollment or attendance boundaries.
Coordinate with schools, parents, and other departments to ensure timely communication and problem resolution.
Oversee preventive maintenance schedules and repairs to ensure the district’s fleet operates safely and efficiently.
Maintain records and prepare reports as required by the district or governing agencies.
Respond to emergency situations, weather events, and transportation-related incidents, developing contingency and crisis management plans.
Promote customer service and foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement within the department.
Organizes and/or participates in projects to promote school bus
Administers and oversees all transportation budgets and preparation of statistics and reports of budget items.
Oversees and participates in the daily operations of the transportation
Supervises a routing department that maintains integrity of student transportation database, school boundaries and bus route information.
Supervises and participates in investigation of traffic
Participates in redistricting for new schools, prepares reports, and makes recommendations to the Chief of School Performance and Auxiliary Services.
Continuous analysis of bus routes and staff time to maximize
Attends workshops and leadership training sessions for professional
Establishes professional development opportunities for various groups within the transportation
Develops and maintains comprehensive Bus Driver
Performs random field observations to ensure excellence from all staff members in the transportation department.
Performs other related work as
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong knowledge of school transportation regulations, fleet maintenance, and routing logistics.
Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and team-building skills.
Proficiency with transportation software and technology (routing, GPS, scheduling, etc.).
Ability to analyze data, prepare reports, and manage a complex operational budget.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
Ability to respond calmly and effectively under pressure.

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Transportation Management, or related field preferred.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in transportation management, preferably in a public school or public sector setting.
Supervisory experience required.
