QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Experience with Exceptional Children (EC) transportation. Five years of management experience in a transportation services supervisory or leadership role. Must understand the IEP process, school bus routing, and possess the ability to organize and supervise people.

JOB GOAL

To promote the safe and efficient transportation of students with disabilities, ensuring the compliance with federal, state, and local policies as it relates to Exceptional Children.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Coordinates transportation services for the exceptional children’s program utilizing both bus and contract transportation resources. Observes the laws and regulations pertaining to EC transportation. Maintains and submits all necessary reports relating to EC transportation, i.e., EC Student Headcount, etc. Meets with school principals and EC bus drivers in the interest of improving EC transportation from the standpoint of safety, service to pupils, efficiency and economy. Supervises EC school bus transportation programs, promotes monitoring systems and driver/monitor training. Works with the District Exceptional Children’s Department to ensure compliance with all state and federal guidelines pertaining to transporting students with disabilities. Collaborates with Health Services regarding updated training opportunities for all bus drivers/monitors. Assists schools and the routing department with routing EC students and programs. Supervises and evaluates EC transportation data managers/bookkeeper, lead drivers, bus drivers, monitors, and safety assistants. Assists in selecting, training, qualifying, certifying and removal of EC school bus drivers and bus monitors. In compliance with G.S. 20-218, it determines that every driver is fit and competent to operate or drive a school bus over the public roads of the state. Investigates and reports accidents involving transportation equipment. Promotes systematic procedures in loading and unloading EC pupils, dismissing and parking school buses on school grounds. Conducts transportation studies relating to EC class/route consolidation, or for the purpose of improving existing transportation. Responds to stakeholder concerns in a timely manner. Attends and successfully completes all training activities as required to improve ability and knowledge in performance of work duties. Serves as team player and role model for other employees in the organization; demonstrates a commitment to continuous quality improvement; supports and exhibits organizational core values of caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, being customer driven, and valuing fairness. Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Proficient in Google Suite, Microsoft Office or related software. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Basic understanding of clerical procedures and systems such as recordkeeping and filing. Ability to work independently.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Potentially prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of talking, hearing, etc.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Background check with local and state law enforcement agencies required. Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license. REV 05/25
