US Port Manager 4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 7780 Essington Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19153 POSITION SUMMARY The U.S. Port Manager at Matus International is responsible for the strategic and day-to-day operational oversight of all port-related activities, including labor planning, cargo receiving and loading, documentation planning, and container scheduling. This role acts as the primary liaison between internal teams and external partners such as steamship lines, customs brokers, port authorities, and terminal operators. This position requires a hands-on leader who can be firm, fair, and consistent in managing teams and third-party vendors. The ideal candidate brings a results-oriented mindset to operational execution, cost control, compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives. They must be able to lead personnel with clarity and accountability while maintaining high standards of safety, accuracy, and efficiency in a fast-paced port environment.

OBJECTIVES

Manage daily operations at the port, including labor scheduling, cargo loading/unloading, and vehicle handling.

Objectives:

People engagement, management Supervise container planning and outbound shipping schedules to meet customer deadlines. Collaborate with internal departments (logistics, documentation, warehouse) to synchronize port activities. Maintain active communication with steamship lines, US Customs, and vendors. Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and Matus safety protocols at all port facilities. Track and reconcile port inventory and manage cargo movement logs with full accuracy. Drive cost savings across labor, equipment rentals, drayage, and demurrage charges. Build and maintain strong working relationships with port authorities and transport carriers. Identify operational inefficiencies and implement corrective actions to streamline processes. Oversee port maintenance, equipment inspections, and vendor performance. Monitor and improve quality control standards to minimize cargo damage and delays. Report KPIs, performance metrics, and continuous improvement initiatives to senior leadership. Maintain compliance of annual renewals, permits, and lease agreements

COMPETENCIES

Knowledge of containerized and non-containerized cargo handling. Proven ability to align port activities with broader supply chain objectives. Strong skills in managing labor teams and third-party contractors. Ability to identify root causes and implement process improvements quickly. Clear, concise communication with cross-functional teams and external vendors. Deep understanding of port-related cost drivers and budget management. Familiarity with OSHA, DOT, and international shipping regulations. Experience negotiating and overseeing port service providers. Use of Lean or Six Sigma methodologies preferred. Capable of making sound operational decisions in real-time. Precise handling of documentation, scheduling, and cargo records. Commitment to a safety-first culture in high-risk environments.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Maritime Operations, Business Administration, or a related field. (preferred) 2-5+ years of progressive experience in port operations, shipping logistics, or terminal management. Experience managing union and non-union labor teams preferred. Familiarity with TMS/WMS systems and port management software. Strong knowledge of U.S. customs, export compliance, and international freight forwarding.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to work in an outdoor port environment in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, wind). Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods across uneven surfaces and industrial areas. Ability to lift, carry, or move objects up to 50 pounds occasionally. Capable of climbing stairs, ladders, and accessing equipment platforms as needed. Comfortable working in close proximity to heavy machinery, trucks, and cargo equipment. Must have adequate visual and auditory acuity to perform safety inspections and communicate effectively in a loud, high-traffic setting. Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety vests, steel-toed boots, gloves, and hearing protection. Occasional travel to off-site locations, terminals, and corporate meetings may be required.
