Description The Solid Waste & Recycling Division is primarily responsible for the disposal of Municipal Solid Waste generated in the County as required by North Carolina State Law and in accordance with all applicable local regulations. Gaston County currently uses an integrated solid waste management plan consisting of sanitary landfilling, compost/mulch, recycling, and related waste reduction programs. Examples of Duties The duties listed below are not all of the duties that may be assigned but are those that are considered as essential for an employee to perform. Supervise, staff, and coordinate the operation of six county Convenience/Recycling Centers, including coordinating the hauling of recyclables and waste containers. Liaison between convenience site staff, vendors, and county staff for service, repairs, and changes. Coordinate the recycling management for county facilities. Increase recyclables

  • Implementation and management of new programs, vendors, and markets. Track market trends, including the recycling program for county residents and employees. Education
  • public awareness, civic programming, childhood education opportunities, newspaper articles, and public speaking events Oversee, plan, and coordinate special events including HHW, America Recyclables Day, Earth Day and partner with Keep Gastonia Beautiful. NC State partnerships
  • grant writing and implementation and completion of state required annual reporting requiring accuracy in data collection.

Manage and coordinate Gard Card Program, including finding and maintaining Gard Card vendors throughout the county, taking orders, delivering weekly, and providing program information to all vendors. Provide citizen response to concerns and questions via email, telephone, or in person. Serve on Carolina’s Recycling Association committees and on state HHW Council. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related field. Supervisory experience preferred. Additional Information The applicant selected must undergo and pass a drug screening test prior to employment.
