Science | Service | Sustainability The Radioactive and Infectious Waste Section Manager directs and coordinates statewide Radioactive Waste and Infectious Waste management programs. Manages activities of staff responsible for permitting/licensing Radioactive and Infectious waste facilities. Works with Director to manages various grant budget requests, workflow, and reporting requirements. Manages requirements for the Integrated Materials Performance Evaluation Program (IMPEP) process.
Job Responsibilities:
Plans, directs, and manages activities related to the regulation, licensing, and compliance at the low-level radioactive waste disposal facility at Barnwell and other licensed radioactive waste facilities, and the transportation of radioactive waste in the state. Coordinates with the US NRC and SCDES Radiation Protection Program. Plans, directs, and manages regulation development for radioactive and infectious waste management programs in accordance with NRC and SCDES requirements. Supervises the inspections of radioactive waste and infectious waste shipments, transporters, and facilities, and recommends enforcement actions for noncompliance. Assists in preparing grant applications and the budgeting process for both infectious waste and radioactive waste management programs. Provides technical assistance for incidents and emergency responses involving radioactive and infectious waste. Supervises engineering reviews and technical evaluation reports for radioactive waste transport documentation, waste containers, waste forms and processes, and equipment for low-level radioactive waste. Assist Director with administrative and programmatic duties as required. Perform other related duties as required. Minimum and Additional Requirements A bachelor’s degree in the natural or physical sciences, public health or related technical field and six (6) years of experience. Or a master’s degree in the natural or physical sciences, public health, or related technical field and five (5) years of environmental experience. Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Additional Requirements:
Extensive knowledge of principles and practices of federal and state environmental laws, rules and regulations governing radioactive waste and infectious waste. Thorough knowledge of state administrative, personnel, budgetary, and legislative procedures. Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and the public, to plan, and direct activities.
