Job Description

Equipment Operator 3.3 3.3 out of 5 stars 5900 Messer Airport Highway, Birmingham, AL 35212 JOB SUMMARY Performs semi-skilled work in the maintenance of the Birmingham Airport and its surrounding properties by operating equipment and driving trucks.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Maintain grass and vegetation adjacent to the runway, taxiway, and around landing lights and the airfield by operating tractor to cut grass and other vegetation. Maintain other airport property by cutting grass with the tractor towing rotary mowers. Perform maintenance on airfield and airport property and grounds using jack hammer, backhoe, asphalt roller and other materials and equipment as required. Provide sanitation using street sweeper to assure runway, taxiway, ramp areas, and roads on airport property are clean and clear of debris. Assist in gathering garbage as needed and drive the garbage/dump truck to collect and dump garbage. Skillfully operate motorized equipment to haul materials, remove dirt, pick up and deliver supplies and equipment from place to place; may also transport personnel. Carefully maintains equipment and performs preventative maintenance and other repairs to equipment by cleaning and checking water, grease, oil, tires, and other mechanized components. May be called upon to work closely with Maintenance Repair Workers, including taking on some repair responsibilities, especially during airport emergencies. Other related work as needed or assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION

(S) & EXPERIENCE High School Diploma or GED equivalent appreciated; equivalent supplemental work in machinery mechanics, driver’s ed, or related field acceptable. Valid State Driver’s License and Commercial Driver’s License both required along with excellent driving record. Minimum of one-year prior experience operating a variety of equipment including tractors and trucks to accomplish landscaping maintenance, airfield, or other areas where requiring excellent upkeep to assure safe travel and use conditions, and property clean up and maintenance. Previous experience using large equipment to maintain property and landscaping appreciated. Previous experience doing asphalt repair work appreciated. Previous experience running backhoe and front loader required. Previous experience in maintenance and repair desired. Knowledge of safe operating procedures and safety codes for all relevant equipment.

REQUIRED SKILLS, ABILITIES & COMPETENCIES

Ability to work without direct supervision, prioritizing and managing various assignments during a shift. Ability to respond promptly and with urgency when conditions require. Ability to always adhere to relevant safety codes. Excellent vision or use of prescribed lenses to assure 20/20 vision. Exceptional manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Capacity to provide and follow direction. Sharp decision-making skills, particularly when under pressure. Ability to communicate orally and in-writing in English with co-workers and supervisors necessary. Must be fully insurable.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Required to stand, walk, and drive large equipment a significant portion of each shift. Must use hands to finger to handle gears, shifts, and steering wheels, reach with hands and arms, bend and kneel. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Consistent exposure to environmental conditions outdoors in all weather conditions, including but not limited to hot and cold temperatures, humidity, and precipitation. Will be exposed to airfield traffic, fumes/noxious odors, dusts, pollen, and chemicals; will frequently be in a noisy environment. Must be able to work any of the three shifts at the airport (6:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m., 2:00 pm-10:30 pm; 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.) as needed. Must have excellent attendance. Must accept responsibility to be on-call which may mean coming back in after shift completion or in the middle of the night as required to address airport emergencies.
