Service Worker A well-established company in Cantonment, Florida is looking for a service worker to join their team. The ideal candidate will direct the activities at the Citizen’s Convenience Center or other comparable facility and performs skilled work in visually screening, identifying, and separating recyclables, special waste, and household hazardous waste from the incoming waste stream. The assigned tasks involve performing heavy lifting and strenuous physical labor and routinely operating light to heavy equipment at the convenience center or the active landfill site.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Recognizes and distinguishes special and household hazardous waste in accordance with rune 62-701 FAC, Solid Waste Management Facilities.
  • Performs routine inspection of facility and complete general site cleanup and maintenance.
  • Explains routine waste disposal policies/procedures and direct the public to appropriate disposal areas.
  • Directs a customers in the proper disposal of scrap metal, appliances, tires, florescent tubes, used oil, batteries, mercury containing devices, electronics waste and other types of solid waste approved for disposal at a facility.
  • Screens solid waste and recyclables materials brought to the site and directs disposal in accordance with prescribed Solid Waste Department guidelines and procedures.
  • Inspects and determines the proper handling and disposal of all types of waste accepted at a facility, including proper storing, sorting, monitoring and correction of unacceptable materials for disposal; must be familiar with the requirements of special handling of spilled pollutants and the proper removal of materials.
  • Explains disposal rules and procedures to the public.
  • Operates waste handling and transfer equipment.
  • Physically removes waste from active offloading area by and/or with equipment and places in designated area for processing.
  • Routinely communicates with work crew members via two-way radio or using hand signals.
  • Maintains records used to assess charges; maintains daily logs of work activity and equipment utilization records, etc.
  • Operates light to heavy landfill maintenance and waste handling equipment (e.g., articulated haulers, loaders, backhoes, tractor-trailers, etc.).
  • Performs traffic control functions.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year experience working the waste stream at a solid waste handling facility.
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Possession of a Class “B” Commercial Driver’s license upon offer of employment.
  • Registered or ability to obtain registration as a trained landfill spotter with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection within one year of employment
  • Knowledge of sources, characteristics and identification of prohibited waste in accordance with rule 62-701 FAC, Solid Waste Management Facilities.
  • Knowledge of landfill waste handling/maintenance procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledge of care and operation of motor vehicles and equipment
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with a landfill environment.
  • Positive interaction with the general public.
  • Operating and maintaining landfill maintenance and waste handling equipment.
  • Effectively communicating with subordinates, peers and superiors.
  • Read and understand simple oral and written communication.
  • Deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in non-standard situations.
  • Ability to meet the necessary physical requirements of the position in all types of weather conditions.
  • While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions, noxious orders, airborne particles and works near moving heavy mechanical equipment
