Job Description About us: For more than 100 years, the City of Burlington, as a service to citizens, has provided and maintained Pine Hill Cemetery, Brown’s Chapel Cemetery circa 1840’s, Northlawn Cemetery and Rest Haven Cemetery as a tranquil, aesthetic setting offering traditional grave sites. Additionally, the City offers the Pine Hill Cemetery Columbarium for those who choose cremation services for burial.
What you will do:
An employee in this class performs routine equipment operator work in maintaining and repairing safe and attractive structures, facilities and grounds for use by city residents. This employee may operate a pickup truck and trailer, tractor, mower, loader, forklift, backhoe, tandem dump truck, dump truck, and/or other motorized landscape equipment. Work includes landscaping, digging, equipment maintenance, leaf collection, truck driving, snow and ice removal, tree removal, cemetery maintenance, and other tasks as assigned. Work subjects the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, and normal hazards associated with operation of equipment.

Examples of Duties Graveyard Duty:
Operates a backhoe to dig graves with precision.
Leaf Wrangler:
Drives leaf trucks and operates leaf vacuums to collect curbside leaves efficiently.
Lawn Care Pro:
Mows cemeteries, parks, ball fields, and city grounds to keep them pristine.
Heavy Lifter:
Handles supply trucks and operates loaders, forklifts, and backhoes for unloading and yard organization.
Material Mover:
Hauls mulch, stone, and dirt to and from job sites using dump trucks.
City Clean-Up Crew:
Keeps facilities tidy by emptying garbage, collecting litter, and discarding yard waste.
Maintenance Alert:
Reports equipment repair needs to supervisors promptly.
Versatile Operator:
Tackles various equipment and manual tasks, including shovels, rakes, and weed eaters.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED equivalency and some prior equipment operation and maintenance experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Valid NC Driver’s license
Special Requirements:
Class (B) CDL driver’s license or the ability to obtain within twelve months of employment date. We will assist you with obtaining if needed.

Work in this class is described as medium and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks and move objects. This employee must have the visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of work assigned. Work typically involves then ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions. The worker is required to have the visual acuity to be the operator of trucks, forklifts, backhoes, and other equipment. employee is subject to hazards, including mechanical equipment, electrical current, noise and vibration and atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors and dusts. Working conditions include both inside and outside environmental conditions.
