JOB SUMMARY

The City of Birmingham is seeking an experienced Equipment Service Writer to support operations within the City’s automotive shop. This role involves coordinating, assigning, and tracking repair and maintenance work, while serving as a key liaison between shop staff, management, and customers. Responsibilities include inspecting and repairing equipment as needed, responding to inquiries, and managing daily shop activities. The ideal candidate will work independently, exercise sound judgment, and regularly report progress to supervisors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position: Driver’s License. Coursework, certification, or experience in using scan tools or a computer to diagnose problems. Coursework, certification, or experience in diagnosing and repairing brake systems. Coursework, certification, or experience in diagnosing front and/or rear suspension problems (e.g. inside tire ware, trailer arms, tie rod, upper and lower control arms, or differentials etc.). Experience interpreting automotive diagnostic information for various target audiences (e.g. department heads, vendors, subordinates, etc.).

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES

Maintains programs and procedures to track the maintenance, repair, and usage of fleet vehicles and equipment and to ensure compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and budgetary procedures. Writes and reviews work orders, reports, and memos regarding auto shop activities and documents on the job accidents and injuries. Oversees maintenance and repairs on rolling stock, equipment, and/or facilities. Inspects equipment/rolling stock before and after completing work and reads reference materials to guide maintenance and repairs. Procures and/or manages inventory (i.e., supplies and equipment) to ensure the products and services are available to meet the operational needs of each department. Acts as a lead worker of peer or support staff by assigning and reviewing work tasks, facilitating training, and providing feedback using policies, procedures, tools, and directives from management in order to ensure tasks are completed in accordance with established requirements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands of the position may vary from sedentary with occasions of walking and standing for brief periods. Work may involve lifting or carrying items or objects weighing up to 75 lbs. as well as stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, or walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is conducted indoors in an auto shop facility and may work in extreme temperatures. Work may involve the use of standard office equipment such as computer, phone and copier. Work may involve the use of electrical, gas, or air powered tools and equipment such as metal cutters, welding equipment, and pneumatic wrench. Work may be conducted in cramped work spaces requiring extended periods in contorted body positions and exposure to contaminates such as dust, gasoline, and/or caustic chemicals, and to potential mechanical and moving vehicle hazards. Work involves exposure to extreme temperatures (hot and cold), working around uneven, cluttered, and slippery surfaces, high vibration and loud noise (e.g. industrial and repair equipment).
