Description General Description:

The Academic Services Advisor (ASA) is responsible for providing academic services designed to personalize a student’s educational experience at the College. This includes serving as the primary liaison with the student in the selection of appropriate academic programs and courses to meet their academic and occupational needs, providing assistance to students in the enrollment and financial aid processes, and assisting students in exploring careers, evaluating academic abilities, and setting goals. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Executive Director, Student Success Services.

Examples of Duties Essential Job Duties:

Assists students with academic and career planning; identifies the educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists with the analysis of each option, including possible outcomes and their implications.
Registers students for courses based upon the student’s academic goals, educational plan, and schedule of classes. Students may be enrolled in all courses on an academic year basis at one time.
Assists students with navigation of the financial aid process, by providing information and guiding students through the FAFSA process and required supplemental documentation.
Establishes mutually respectful one-on-one relationships with students to provide consistent and accurate communication regarding a student’s entire educational experience at the College.
Provides comprehensive assistance to dual enrollment students by providing advising and registration services.
Collaborates with high school guidance counselors regarding advising and academic services for dual enrollment students; including training of high school guidance counselors on dual enrollment procedures.
Processes approved late registration course requests for students.
Explores individual problems with a student that might lead to academic challenges. Provides resources to assist students with resolving problems and issues.
Assists students with academic testing; including college placement testing and industry certification exams. Assists with the administration of standardized tests, offered through Florida Civic Literacy, and PERT.
Teaches at least one student life skills class per academic year.
Promotes positive student learning outcomes through effective teaching.
Plans, organizes, and instructs assigned course to promote student success.
Evaluates students using interviews, advising sessions, career interest inventories, and other tools; assists students to understand their abilities, talents, and interests in order to develop realistic academic and career goals.
Assumes responsibility for an equitable share of total Academic Services student caseload.
Assists with the evaluation of student transcripts to identify opportunities for submission of course substitution and curriculum modification requests.
Maintains knowledge of up-to-date information pertaining to specific requirements at the state universities and other transfer institutions.
Coordinates and organizes the New Student Orientation Program that includes, but is not limited to, presenting academic information, explaining College policies and procedures, and assisting students as they transition to the College learning environment.
Coordinates workshops or presentations for students pertaining to career assessments, goal setting study skills, time management, stress management, values clarification, etc.
Participates in the College’s efforts, activities, and responsibilities with regard to accreditation and reaffirmation.
Serves on various standing committees.
Advises students that need to complete service hours for scholarship benefits.
Assists in all College recruitment & retention efforts, as appropriate.
Required to attend Graduation/Commencement ceremonies.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

Knowledge of the organization and operation of the Student Affairs area (registration, testing, advising, admissions, etc.) and of the various academic and career programs offered.
Knowledge of College mission, policies, procedures, and services for students and staff.
Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
Ability to handle confidential matters judiciously.
Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with other employees.
Ability to plan and organize diverse and simultaneous projects.
Effective educational and career advisement skills.
Ability to work with students of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
Skill in operating a computer and various supporting software packages.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse population both verbally and in writing.
Ability to perform basic math calculations.

Qualifications Education and Qualifications:

Required Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Education, Counseling, Student Personnel, Communications or other related field.
Preferred Two (2) years experience in student advising and career planning at the postsecondary level.
