Schedule:
One weekend day required, 20-28 hours per week. KC Pet Project is hiring a part-time Retail and Customer Engagement Specialist at our main shelter location, the Kansas City Campus for Animal Care (KCCAC). We are seeking a compassionate, people-oriented individual to support our in-shelter retail store. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys engaging with the public, educating adopters, and working closely with a dedicated team of staff and volunteers in a mission-drive, fast paced environment. You’ll be responsible for assisting customers, helping new pet adopters find the right supplies, maintaining a welcoming and organized store, and supporting volunteer-led retail operations. Essential Functions & Responsibilities Provide exceptional, professional, and individualized customer service to shelter visitors, adopters, customers (and their pets!) Assist adopters in selecting appropriate supplies and products for their new pets, offering education-based recommendations that support long-term success. Operate the point-of-sale system, process transactions, and maintain accurate cash handling procedures, including opening and closing responsibilities. Maintain clean, stocked, and organized retail displays and merchandise areas. Support and mentor retail volunteers by answering questions, providing guidance, delegating tasks, and ensuring consistent customer service practices. Restock products and monitor inventory levels; document and communicate low-stock needs to the manager. Assist with product tagging, pricing, and merchandising tasks. Take initiative in promoting key products to help reach monthly sales goals. Represent the mission and values of the shelter through every interaction.
Working Conditions:
Most functions will be performed at the Kansas City Campus for Animal Care. Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, high noise levels, extreme temperatures, hazardous chemicals, and sharp objects. Must be able to lift up to 50 lb., sustain long periods of standing, bending, stooping, reaching and animal handling and restraint for various activity levels of animals in an animal shelter-type setting. Must be able to effectively manage and navigate the emotional aspects of animal welfare. Qualifications High School Diploma Customer service experience is required. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to take initiative, work independently, and support a collaborative team culture. Attention to detail, time management, and strong multitasking abilities. Must be available to work morning or evening shifts and holidays based on the assigned schedule.
