Description:

An employee in this class performs a variety of customer service, cash collection,recordkeeping, and clerical work in support of utility accounts. The employee works at thecustomer service window, the drive-thru window, and answers the telephone to assist customerswith inquiries regarding water accounts and utility payments

• Work involves serving as a source of citizen contact for utility accounts; taking payments and issuing receipts; processing applications for service; preparing and updating customer accounts; notifying customers of possible meter consumption; reconciling batches and correcting errors in the system; processing leak adjustments; contacting customers with significant water flow; requesting meter reader staff to check out customer issues; balancing the cash drawer and payment information daily; assisting with the preparation of reports; and researching and providing information on customer accounts, bills, and usage•Work involves heavy public contact and coordination with field and other department staff•Work involves attention to detail, accuracy, and knowledge of department policies and procedures•Considerable tact, diplomacy, and courtesy are required in public contact functions•Work is performed under general supervision of the Utilities Billing Manager and is evaluated through observation, review of records, and feedback from customers served.

Additional Job Duties

• Periodically provides support to the Inspections Department and assists with stocking housekeeping closets with supplies as needed
• Performs related duties as required.

Desirable Education and Experience

• Graduation from high school and experience in customer service work and work using a computer, preferably in a public utility or collections function; or
• an equivalent combination of education and experience.
