Reporting to the Makerspace Director of Educational Initiatives, the Makerspace Practitioner will assist with managing the Oliver Wendell Holmes Library’s 4,000 square foot makerspace, The Nest , which houses a data lab, a robotics lab, a woodshop, classroom spaces, and more. The ideal candidate will be an energetic and dynamic team player; have strong organizational, writing, and public speaking skills; and be able to multitask in a fast-paced environment. This position is a .75 FTE staff position with a typical schedule of Sunday through Thursday 12:00 – 8:00 PM during the academic year (no summers). This position does not come with housing. The expected start date is late August 2025.
Essential functions include:
Makerspace management : Maintaining fabrication equipment (with assistance of Director) to ensure a safe and functional environment during open hours. Manage inventory of consumables and equipment, including ordering supplies as needed. Train PA community members (students, student clubs, faculty, staff, and young children of faculty and staff members) on the safe and proper use of makerspace equipment and tools. Stay current with emerging technologies and trends in makerspace education in order to make recommendations about equipment and processes to expand the capabilities and offerings of the Nest. Facilitate project-based learning : Guide PA community members through the design process, from ideation and prototyping to testing and refinement, including data collection and analysis. Promote collaborative learning and teamwork through engaging group projects and workshops. Support PA community members in developing school and independent projects that showcase their skills and knowledge, potentially including data-driven investigations.

Confident and comfortable in trying new ideas, which includes being resourceful in their skill development and liking to learn by trial and error. Able to communicate clearly and effectively to all PA community members. Passionate about fostering creativity and innovation in students.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Computer Science or the equivalent combination of experience and education (including Associates and/or Technical Degrees in related fields). One year experience teaching and working with students in a makerspace or similar studio environment. Knowledge and experience with typical equipment found in design/makerspaces such as 3D Printers (SLA & FDM), laser cutters, CNC routers, and sewing and embroidery machines, and helping others use these technologies. Comfort using and teaching others a variety of software associated with a makerspace and its equipment, such as the Adobe Suite, Rhino, SketchUp, AutoCAD, Fusion, TinkerCAD, or similar. Ability to effectively troubleshoot and problem solve a variety of hardware and software problems, including software and hardware that may be initially unfamiliar. Demonstrates a passion for hands-on education, fabrication and creating. Has the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with robotics, electronics, design thinking, and basic data analysis concepts. Experience with
Micro:
bits, ADAFruit playground, Arduino, and/or Raspberry Pi. Knowledge of AI education tools and resources.
