The Orchestra Teacher will chiefly work with students in orchestra classes/rehearsals, but will also be involved with curricular planning, music library, instrument inventory, measurement and evaluation, production, and public relations.
ABOUT YOUNG MUSICIANS OF ALAMANCE
Young Musicians of Alamance (YMA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit institution and is one of the leading providers of music education in Burlington, Alamance County, and the surrounding area. Since its founding in 2016, YMA has grown to serve hundreds of students, families, concertgoers, and community partners across the region. The longest-running program within YMA is the Saturday classes. These include three different level groups, each learning Orchestra, Modern Band, and Audiation and Movement. Guiding principles include opportunity for all, communication and collaboration, music as a language, creating a holistic experience, and developing accountability with respect.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The primary location for orchestra classes/rehearsals is First Reformed
UCC, 513 W.
Front St., Burlington, NC. Rehearsals and classes take place on Saturdays between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.. The program calendar runs from the weekend after Labor Day to the first weekend of June, with weeks off for holidays. The rate for teaching is based on a $25-$50/hr range and paid on the monthly YMA payroll. While repertoire and material will change each year, in 2024-2025, the first-level orchestra included 6 students and performed songs from memory in major and minor keys and in duple and triple meter. The second-level orchestra included 12 students and performed published works listed at the grade 1-2 level. The most advanced level of orchestra included 7 students and performed music from the ABRSM Book 3 and similar.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist with identifying and recruiting prospective new students as well as auditions/evaluations for both new and returning members. Conduct all rehearsals, performances, and special events. If a substitute will be needed, communicate with directors and staff ahead of time to ensure quality and continuity of the educational experience, assisting as necessary. With the Artistic Director, engage in short- and long-term planning for the sequencing of instruction, to develop musicianship and technical skills at the individual and ensemble level. With the YMA ensemble music library available as a resource, work with the Artistic Director to select repertoire and formats of music to best serve the educational and performance needs of the students; Prepare parts and other materials as needed for distribution. Set up and strike as necessary for classes, rehearsals, and performances. Maintain instrument inventory information; ensure students have instruments of appropriate size and functionality; communicate with staff regarding repairs, replacements, and needs for acquisition. Develop and maintain channels of communication with students/parents/ensembles; be engaged in collegial communication with fellow teachers and with all staff, directors, volunteers, and board. Assist with Measurement and Evaluation, including auditions, juries, and other assessments. Maintain professional standards and be a role model as a musician and teacher.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The Orchestra Teacher will be a member of the instructional team, collaborating with teachers of Audiation and Movement, Modern Band, Piano, and other instruments. The Orchestra Teacher will report directly to the Executive Staff, ultimately reporting to the Board of Directors.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate for the position will have: a degree in music, with a major in music education preferred. teaching experience relevant to working with students of diverse backgrounds, including elementary through high school. comfort working with musicians, teachers, students, volunteers, and donors. a working knowledge of Western classical music, standard orchestral repertoire, composers and artists of historically underrepresented backgrounds, music appropriate for educational ensemble settings, and a variety of styles and genres of music from around the world and across time periods. a desire to continue learning, to incorporate audiation and Music Learning Theory into orchestral settings to collaborate, and to be a part of a growing, dynamic musical organization. experience in MS Office, music notation and digital audio software, email, and social media. the ability to work independently as well as in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. excellent writing, speaking, creative, and organizational skills.
