Description Pratt seeks exceptional K-12 arts educators who will plan and teach art courses to elementary, middle and/or high school students in after-school programs in Brooklyn and/or Manhattan. Each year, the Center for Art, Design, and Community Engagement K-12 at Pratt Institute serves over 1800 children ages 6-18 in its numerous community programs, as well as coordinates a number of faculty-led initiatives and activities on and off campus. Working in a community setting, the instructor is an experienced and capable teaching artist, committed to the Center K-12 mission, who is excited to teach arts to elementary, middle school and/or high school students. The position may include, but is not limited to: curriculum development, leading classes, submitting supply requests, managing supplies, creating exhibitions of student work, survey distribution, and communicating with Center K-12 and community partners. Examples of Duties Develop daily lesson plans that develop students’ skills and move projects towards completion Creating a welcoming, stimulating, creative environment for all learners, supporting individual learners and leading group feedback sessions In addition to teaching the course, other responsibilities may include: Work with Center K-12 staff to support the evaluation of the program. Maintain weekly attendance records. Share short program reports and photos for K-12 outreach materials. Attend K-12 staff meetings, or meetings with Center Director to prepare for the program and check in as needed. Collaborate with other Center K-12 staff to solve issues/problems that may arise to make programs run smoothly.
Qualifications Education:
BA or BFA or equivalent required
Experience:
Minimum 2 years’ experience as a teaching artist. Must be available to work when program is in session. Commitment to positive youth development and asset-based frameworks is required. Previous teaching experience in a K-12 environment or working with low-income youth in NYC is a plus.
Teaching Skills:
Expertise in subject matter of the course. Must have the ability to work successfully with elementary, middle school and high school aged youth, including the ability to establish a working classroom environment. Ability to develop a multi-session sequence of projects. Ability to break projects into subtasks with specific skill development Must have the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population of students and staff, as well as demonstrate intercultural competence with an understanding of the dynamics of diversity in a community education setting.

Compensation is based on contact hours, determined by the number of credit hours assigned to each course.
