Overview:

WRAL-TV seeks a dedicated Part-Time TV Broadcast Technician to support our news production team. This role involves operating cameras, managing audio and lighting setups, and ensuring high-quality broadcast production. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, quick decision-making skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced news environment. Please note the shift for this Part-Time position is 4am-1pm with weekend shifts required.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Operate cameras per producer/director instructions to achieve desired shots and audio mixes.
  • Suggest optimal camera shots to enhance production quality.
  • Manage teleprompter systems as needed.
  • Assist with studio lighting, including the use of a light meter for optimal lighting conditions.
  • Set up and dismantle production equipment efficiently.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in the studio and production areas.
  • Work collaboratively with producers, directors, and other production staff to meet broadcast standards.
Required Qualifications:

 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including first, second, and third shifts as needed.
  • Quick decision-making abilities in high-pressure, live broadcast environments.
  • Experience operating a vest-managed Steadicam is a plus.
  • Ability to work in various environments, including outdoor and extreme weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in live news production or television broadcasting.
  • Familiarity with broadcast equipment, including audio consoles, video switchers, and lighting rigs.
  • Knowledge of camera operation techniques, including robotic and handheld cameras.
  • Experience with newsroom production systems such as ENPS, iNews, or similar.
  • Understanding of basic video editing and post-production workflows.
  • Certifications in broadcasting, production, or audiovisual technology are a plus.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical issues quickly to ensure smooth broadcasts.
Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

  • Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 40 lbs. unassisted.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and kneeling during production activities.
  • Ability to hold and operate a camera for extended periods, including shoulder-mounted and Steadicam operation.
  • Capable of working in tight spaces and adjusting equipment at various heights.
  • May involve climbing ladders or using lift equipment to adjust lighting and rigging.
  • Work may be performed in outdoor environments with exposure to extreme temperatures, rain, and other weather conditions.
  • Ability to react quickly to fast-paced, high-pressure situations in a live broadcast setting.
