Job Description First Methodist Opelika’s Church Communications Director is a part-time, strategic leadership role responsible for telling the story of what God is doing in and through our church. This individual will lead and implement a unified communications strategy that supports the church’s mission, aligns with our values, and connects people to the life and message of Jesus. The Communications Director will oversee all aspects of internal and external communications, including digital, print, and brand-related messaging. This position leads a team of talented volunteers and college interns and ensures clarity, consistency, and creativity across all platforms—website, social media, email, Sunday morning materials, and beyond. The director will collaborate with ministry leaders to support events, campaigns, and discipleship pathways with compelling storytelling and design. This role offers the opportunity to shape how our church engages with the community and each other by celebrating God’s work and inviting people to respond. The Communications Director plays a vital role in helping our church speak with one clear voice to inspire faith and action. Applicant Requirements and Qualifications The ideal candidate for the Church Communications Director position at First Methodist Church of Opelika will possess the following: A vibrant, growing faith in Jesus and a deep commitment to the mission and values of First Methodist Opelika. A heart for inviting others to follow Jesus and an understanding of how strategic communication can support spiritual formation and outreach. Proven experience in communications, marketing, or media, preferably in a church or ministry setting. Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills with a talent for storytelling and message clarity. Proficiency in communication platforms (e.g., social media, website CMS, email tools, and design software such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite). Leadership ability to recruit, equip, and empower volunteers and interns, fostering teamwork and ownership. High capacity for strategic thinking, organization, and managing multiple projects with creativity and excellence. A willingness to grow, adapt, and respond to feedback in a fast-paced, team-based ministry environment. Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field preferred. Additional Information This is a part-time (approx. 25 hrs./week) exempt position, reporting to the Senior Pastor. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for major ministry events. Compensation is commensurate with experience and includes part-time staff benefits. Membership at First Methodist is not a requirement for this position but is preferred. Any candidate who is offered a position with First Methodist Church of Opelika will be required to undergo a background check and a drug test.
