Commissions Job Summary:
The Onboard Sales associate interacts with passengers, providing railroading knowledge, stories, and regional history while promoting and selling retail merchandise. The role focuses on achieving sales goals and delivering excellent customer service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Interact with passengers to provide suggestive sales and promote retail merchandise. Manage time effectively onboard the train to ensure all passengers have the opportunity to make a purchase. Assist in passenger boarding and de-boarding, as requested. Demonstrate a strong understanding of sales targets and consistently strive to meet or exceed these goals through effective sales techniques and customer engagement. Answer passenger questions and provide customer service. Complete required paperwork and recordkeeping in a timely manner, ensuring communication with retail leadership on product sales and analysis. Always maintain a professional appearance in GSMR-issued uniform. Provide regional history, stories, and railroading knowledge to passengers. Demonstrate an ability to maintain dependable work attendance and flexibility with assigned work schedules. Maintain and organize onboard inventory in designated storage areas. Comply with GSMR policies, procedures, and safety program including safety rules, operating rules, and participation in ongoing safety training/regular daily safety meetings. Ensure that all guest wishes are met as far as reasonably possible. Other duties assigned.
Work Environment:
Work on and off the train directly with the public in varied terrain in all weather during both daylight and dark hours. Must be able to stand, walk, and perform job functions up to 10 hours per day on and off a moving train. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including holidays, weekends, and nights dictated by train schedule and department needs. Able to work long days and may require prolonged standing and lifting of objects up to 50 lbs
Education, Skill, and Work Experience Requirements:
Proven ability in selling, negotiating, and communicating effectively to drive sales and enhance customer satisfaction. Must be able to interact effectively with coworkers and passengers, possessing good interpersonal skills. Available to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and holidays. Preferred knowledge of Appalachian history, GSMR, and regional railroading history. Preferred experience with customer service, guest service, and/or retail sales. Must be able to maintain balance and stability while traveling on a moving train. Must be comfortable with public speaking and interacting with large groups of people without amplification. Ability to transport merchandise for restocking and maneuver a small cart or carry a stocked bag throughout a moving train. Proficiency in using technology, including but not limited to Microsoft Forms, scanning QR codes, and POS systems such as Square Up. Must pass a pre-employment background check. Capacity for cash handling and daily reporting skills.
