Planetarium Coordinator Rochester Museum & Science Center Rochester, NY Job Details Full-time $20 – $22 an hour 18 hours ago Benefits Health savings account Health insurance Dental insurance 401(k) Paid time off Employee assistance program Vision insurance 401(k) matching Employee discount Life insurance Qualifications Theater Customer service Public speaking English Astronomy Bachelor’s degree Leadership Entry level Full Job Description The Rochester Museum & Science Center is seeking a highly organized and outgoing Planetarium Coordinator supports the day-to-day operations of the Strasenburgh Planetarium, including presenting shows, maintaining equipment, supporting hospitality events, managing the overall calendar for the planetarium, and assisting with the development of new programs. They are responsible for educating and entertaining audiences through astronomy presentations, demonstrations, and lectures.

DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assists Planetarium Director in managing and conducting presentations and school shows, including program scheduling and publicity for the Planetarium. Assists in developing and updating educational materials for school planetarium shows, including program scripts, utilizing a wide range of multimedia effects. Fields inquiries and calendar requests for Planetarium time and resources. Sets up and prepares class demonstrations working from knowledge of astronomy, reference materials, course outline, and oral instructions. Works with the Director of Planetarium to review the literature and related sciences to stay current with recent developments. Greet audiences, check tickets, and assist with seating as needed. Operates a variety of equipment, including a star projector, various audio and visual equipment, sound system, various hand and power tools and office equipment. Cleans and ensures proper storage of the Planetarium equipment; ensures Planetarium work areas are in clean and orderly condition. Collaborates with other stakeholders to determine the public show schedule, field trip show catalog, and special events. Supports hospitality events by working with the Hospitality Coordinator to meet with customers in support of specific event needs, and operating planetarium equipment for events, as needed. Ensure a positive and engaging experience for visitors by providing excellent customer service, maintaining a clean and safe environment, and addressing any visitor needs or concerns.

JOB DIMENSIONS

Operate computer keyboard, mouse, touchscreens, fader knots, switches and microphones while remaining aware of the audience in near-total darkness. Judge the quality of projected images in the Star Theater and make necessary adjustments or recommendations. Maintain communication with the box office staff and the lobby situation, move quickly between darkness in the Star Theater and the bright daylight in the hallways and lobby. Judge appropriate sound volume and quality for the Star Theater audience. Move quickly to any part of the Star Theater or exit ramps as needed to assist visitors. Move audience chairs into required arrangements for each type of show or event. Between shows, clean Star Theater as needed (including chairs, controls, microphones, and floor)

FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Demonstrated previous experience leading science education activities, either formal or informal Basic knowledge of the astronomical sky, including brightest stars, constellations, apparent motions of the sun, moon, and planets, and details of the solar system. Knowledge of the fundamentals of astronomical and related sciences as studied by such institutions as NASA and the world’s major research universities, or enthusiasm and motivation to learn as part of the job. Skill in discussing spatial relationships quantitatively in terms of sizes, distances, and angles; ability to express relationships as percentages or ratios; ability to add and subtract time intervals. Ability to react calmly and professionally during emergency situations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and comfort with public speaking Experience engaging audiences in formal or informal science education environments Prior customer service experience A sense of dramatic structure and pacing gained from live performance in music or theater. Bachelor’s Degree, preferred, in Astronomy or Science Education, Theater, or related field. Ability to read and understand communications in standard English.
