This role involves deploying the drone as a first responder to calls for service or as requested by officers in designated operating areas. The operator provides crucial information gained from drone overwatch to responding officers on the scene.

Examples of Duties Required Duties:

Monitor priority calls for service and significant events using technological resources such as Live911, deploy the drone as a first responder to calls for service or as requested by officers in designated operating areas, provide real-time information obtained from drone overwatch to responding officers on the scene, ensure compliance with all applicable FAA rules and regulations governing drone operations and support priority calls for service and events with the use of the drone for the First Responder program.

Examples of Duties:

Understand and utilize available technological resources, including Live911, deploy the drone from the Public Safety Center or other launch sites to calls for service and provide necessary information to responding to officers, return the drone to its base of operations after completing operational tasks, maintain knowledge of all FAA rules and regulations and ensure proper notification to relevant authorities, familiarize oneself with the Winston-Salem Police Department’s policies and procedures related to drone operations, acquire knowledge of technologies associated with the drone program, including Drone Sense, AXON, and Live911.

Typical Qualifications Education and Experience:

Must be familiar with Drones and their operations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to become knowledgeable about Winston-Salem Police Department’s policies and procedures related to drone operations. Must have or be able to have an understanding of technologies associated with the drone program, including Drone Sense, AXON, and Live911.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time while monitoring or operating a Drone. Must be able to lift up to 100lbs while working with Drone equipment.

Working Conditions:

Primarily outdoor work environment, with work at off-site locations of drones, exposure to varying weather conditions, including cold, heat, adverse weather, possible exposure to loud sounds and may witness distressing scenes during law enforcement investigations.

Special Requirements:

Must possess a Remote Pilot Certificate, Part 107 license, North Carolina Department of Transporation Drone License and must possess or be able to obtain certification through the Winston-Salem Police Department’s drone program.
