The Multimedia Journalist candidate must be ready to immerse in vigorous enterprising storytelling through multiple platforms, all while contributing to a team of researchers, extension agents and support staff whose passionate work is helping to make a difference in the lives of South Carolinians. The ideal candidate is an experienced self-starter who can thrive in a fast-paced environment while balancing multiple projects. The multimedia journalist will produce enterprising news stories in various formats (VO, VOSOT, and news packages), social media posts, and host magazine-format show and podcast. In the capacity of MMJ, you will pitch, write, shoot, conduct interviews, record voice-overs, videotape digital assets and edit media. SC State PSA consists of seven regions throughout South Carolina and is dedicated to improving the quality of lives and standard of living of South Carolinians. The MARCOM team at SC State PSA uses innovative journalistic approaches, backed by comprehensive research, to engage and inform viewers on program areas and outreach at 1890 Research & Extension, through multiple platforms. Essential Functions
- Pitches enterprising packages to local and national media, write scripts, record voiceovers, and conduct research in program areas.
- Serves as assistant producer and host of the monthly magazine television program that highlights SC State PSA’s regional and global impact.
The MMJ will assist with the pre-production, production, and post-production of the monthly show, Growing Palmetto. Collaborates with 1890 Extension directors and staff to compile data/facts; conduct research and gather information; interview subjects; produce and edit packages for broadcast.
- Conducts research and generates leadership-based questions for SC State PSA’s monthly podcast, Elevate Leadership.
The podcast seeks to advance communities through entrepreneurship and leadership development through conversations with leaders and entrepreneurs.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Writes, produces, shoots, edits packages/VNRs, and pitch enterprising story ideas.
- Produces daily content on a variety of platforms including the internet, social networking sites, streaming sites, and mobile phones.
- Uses creative production techniques, such as graphics and new forms of media to enhance stories.
- Uses social media and digital tools to research, discover, and distribute content.
- Works independently and in collaboration to create compelling, timely, and accurate coverage to connect with viewers across traditional and digital platforms.
- Gathers and verifies information regarding stories through interviews, observation, and research.
- Produces specialty projects and other duties as assigned.
- Conducts research, writes scripts, and serves as host of a monthly magazine format show, Growing Palmetto.
- Conducts research, writes scripts, and serves as assistant producer of monthly podcast, Elevate Leadership.
- Communicates with management regarding story development while working alongside the director of strategic communication, assistant director of strategic communications, director of integrated media, and social media strategist to produce packages.
- Establishes a strong network of sources and contacts within SC State PSA and the community to develop story leads and ongoing relationships.
- Works with graphic designer and integrated media team to secure photography, videography, and design elements to complete a project.
- Acts as an integral member of the Strategic Communications team, assisting on writing projects as needed, providing creative ideas, and supporting productivity goals.
- Presents drafts to the director of integrated media for feedback and advice, revises material to reach the target audience, achieves the desired effect, and meets deadlines.
- Actively raises awareness of and increases engagement of SC State PSA’s print and digital channels by leveraging innovative digital assets, identifying and implementing innovative new opportunities to package and deliver editorial content, and developing and executing marketing plans for the channels. Required and Desired Skills and Traits
- Experience with multimedia skills; script writing, non-linear editing, DSLR/ENG camera, voice tracking for broadcast news and podcasting.
- Demonstrate excellence in writing and communication skills, including proper grammar, spelling and AP Style.
- Excellent proofreading skills.
- Proficiency in word processing, internet and web-based research, and electronic modes of communication.
- Demonstrate experience managing multiple priorities and working independently in a professional environment with minimal supervision.

- Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Mass Communications, Media Arts or a related field.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience anchoring or reporting for a news station or independent production company.
- Solid vocal delivery, camera presence, and clean enunciation.
- Strong writing and post-production skills.
- A reel/portfolio of examples of the candidates work. Proficient working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Sharepoint), DSLR/ENG cameras, and Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere Pro, and Photoshop).
