JOB SUMMARY:
Graphic Designers are responsible for researching and creating designs and concepts to produce sample layouts and various materials (e.g., promotional flyers, distinctive logos, brochures, bookmarks, invitations, signs, newsletters, etc.) using computer desktop publishing software. They consult with the library team to determine project objectives, gather information, develop design options and specifications, and estimate materials, equipment, budget and time schedules to complete projects. Individuals in this job class also coordinate with various departments and individuals, both internal and external, to ensure the production of the graphic design projects are developed and finalized in accordance with specific needs. They work under general supervision and their work is reviewed based on completion of projects according to specifications and by given deadlines.
EXAMPLES OF JOB DUTIES
Provides creative services to support the professional, educational, and promotional activities of the Birmingham Public Library System. Plans, analyzes, and creates visual solutions to communications problems. Coordinates with various departments/individuals in order to ensure the production of the graphic design projects are developed and finalized in accordance with specific needs. Creates and researches designs and concepts to produce sample layouts and various materials (e.g., promotional flyers, newsletters, etc.) using computer desktop publishing software in order to fulfill request orders by receiving orders and meeting with co-workers or supervisor to determine design specifications. Maintains records of completed projects by storing information and images created in order to access or reference at a later date. Consults with outside vendors to discuss project specifications (e.g., design placement, pagination, etc.) and to provide guidance. Creates material for and assists with special projects and events at the request of various departments. Consults with co-workers to determine project objectives, gather information, develop design options and specifications, and estimate materials, equipment, budget and time schedules to complete projects. Develops graphics and layout for product illustrations, company logos, social media, and the website.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of design layout for producing print jobs. Knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques of graphic design and layout. Knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, and techniques of desktop publishing. Knowledge of the uses and application of graphic arts software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Quark Express).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree, Bachelor’s Degree in Art, Graphic Design, Advertising, or a related field with one year of experience.
