SUMMARY:
The Staff Designer is creative and detail-oriented to support the design and production needs of the American Mathematical Society. This role is required to work with internal and external teams on projects from start to completion. The Staff Designer will contribute to a wide range of visual projects, ensuring all creative output aligns with AMS’s brand standards and advances its mission to advance research and creative connections in the mathematical sciences.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Graphic Design and Illustration :
Create print and digital materials including flyers, brochures, advertisements, social media graphics, banners, signage, and basic infographics.
Content Production :
Assist with the layout and formatting of reports, newsletters, marketing collateral, and event materials.
Brand Compliance :
Ensure all designs adhere to established AMS branding guidelines and visual identity standards.
Collaboration :
Work closely with Communications, Marketing, Membership, Meetings, and other departments to understand project objectives and deliver effective visual solutions.
Project Coordination:
Manage assigned projects from concept through delivery, meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality standards.
Asset Management :
Maintain organized archives of artwork, templates, logos, and visual assets for internal use.
Production Support :
Prepare artwork files for production and coordinate with print and digital vendors as needed. Assist in figure production to ensure the mathematical accuracy of graphics and that graphics are clear and legible. Communicate with Production Editors and authors to design and typeset covers for AMS books and journals.
Creative Development :
Contribute ideas during creative brainstorming sessions and suggest visual approaches that enhance project goals.
Video Editing :
Provide video editing services. Trim video footage, Input music, dialogues, text, graphics, and effects, adhering to AMS design and branding standards.
Printing Support :
Communicate effectively with the AMS in-house Printshop to make sure all design files adhere to printing standards and that all printed products are checked for quality and accuracy.
Process Implementation :
Maintain documentation and organization of departmental procedures and resources.
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS
The Staff Designer must maintain productive working relationships with internal and external teams.

QUALIFICATIONS

Two or more years of professional design experience, preferably in an academic, nonprofit, or association setting. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud, particularly InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Solid understanding of design principles, layout, typography, and visual hierarchy. Experience designing for both print and digital formats. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing polished, professional work. Ability to balance multiple projects and meet deadlines in a collaborative environment.
