Job Description

For 75 years, The Baker Company in Sanford, ME, has been at the forefront of developing innovative solutions for air containment, contamination control, and controlled environments. Our products, including biological safety cabinets, clean benches, fume hoods, and pharmacy isolators, offer unmatched user and product protection for various applications. We design and build the equipment that is used every day in cutting-edge biological and pharmaceutical research by some of the world’s leading companies and research organizations. The Mechanical Designer develops new products and modifies existing products using all current, past, and emerging Baker technologies. The Designer is also involved in the development of processes and systems to support the design and sale of products. The role requires creative thinking and problem-solving skills. The person in this position shall be capable of flexible thought and be capable of listening to others’ ideas and incorporating their thoughts and concepts for a better overall design.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Work with a variety of team members and stake holders including vendors, production, purchasing, customer service, Sr. management, finance, CAM, and engineering for the design and construction of new products and modification or customization to existing products Work with moderate supervision to conceptualize, plan, organize, and conduct detailed mechanical design Generate product and detailed drawings using engineering computer-aided design systems Effectively communicate concepts and design through presentations, reviews, team meetings, etc. Generate and revise Bills of Material and Operations as described in the company’s design release process Generate and execute Engineering Change Requests (CRs) as described in the company’s CR process Research new product ideas, methods, and practices relating to products based on marketing and engineering directives; initialize development or co-develop technologies with other disciplines within the company Make every effort to focus on doing-it-right to make sure the customer is happy or satisfied with our units. Provide value to our customers by using Lean tools and concepts to identify and eliminate waste in all forms (scrap/rework, transportation, motion, waiting, inventory, over production, over processing, and under-utilization of people). Uses systemic thinking by seeing processes from end to end and works to challenge the status quo to eliminate the root cause of problems. Is involved in individual and/or team activities that involve using Lean tools and concepts to improve the flow of information and material. Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to lift materials and parts weighing between 30-40 lbs. occasionally (10%-20% of the time) Must be able to work on elevated stands, climb stepladders and work in a standing position occasionally (25% – 35% of the time) Must be able to work at a computer for up to 100% of the time

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Associate’s degree in engineering or design discipline and 2 years of related experience Experience with design and development of products and/or processes Experience with 3-D CAD, Solid Edge preferred Strong mechanical aptitude, ability to use basic measuring tools, and hands-on capabilities to work on projects without supervision Sheet metal experience preferred Proficiency in MS Word, Excel Works well in a team environment
