Essential Duties:
Interpret Classroom Communication
- Provide real-time ASL interpretation of spoken language, classroom instructions, and peer interactions to ensure the student has full access to communication.
Facilitate Social Interaction - Support the student’s ability to engage with peers by interpreting during recess, lunch, group activities, and classroom discussions.
Adapt Communication to Developmental Level - Modify signing style and vocabulary to match the student’s language development and comprehension level.
Collaborate with the Educational Team - Work closely with teachers, speech-language pathologists, and other support staff to reinforce learning goals and ensure consistency in communication strategies.
Support Language Development - Reinforce language skills by modeling appropriate ASL use and encouraging the student’s expressive and receptive communication.
Ensure Inclusion in Activities - Interpret and facilitate participation in music, gym, and other sensory-based activities while maintaining accessibility for the student.
Maintain Confidentiality and Professionalism - Adhere to ethical guidelines and confidentiality standards in educational interpreting.
Required Qualifications:
Successful completion of an Interpreter Training Program affiliated with an accredited educational institution
Current, national interpreter certification (RID or NAD) or Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Certification.
Individuals pursuing certification may apply and mentoring will be arranged.
