Job Goal:
To provide interpretation and translation services, instructional assistance, and effective educational support for deaf and hard of hearing students in the school system. To provide consultative and collaborative services to teachers, parents, administrators, and staff to support academic achievement and school success for deaf and hard of hearing students.
Qualifications:
Appropriate degree/certification from an accredited institution. Training in speech pathology and/or communication disorders from an accredited institution preferred. Possess and maintain membership in good standing with the National Registry for Interpreters for the Deaf. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457. Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills. Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups Ability to comprehend and interpret both oral and written directives relevant to the instructional procedures and other classroom activities. Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member. Ability to use technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information. Physical strength, stamina, dexterity, and acuity to perform essential job functions and responsibilities. Ability to collaborate and communicate with administrators, teachers, parents, and other school system staff to ensure the effective implementation of IEPs for designated students. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.
Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals, and priorities. Interprets or transliterates messages from an auditory to a visual system so that the student can understand, whether it be American Sign Language, signing exact English, oral interpreting or cued speech. Interprets or transliterates messages from a visual system to spoken English. Determines the student’s most appropriate mode of communication and delivers messages in that mode. Collaborates with teachers working with a deaf or hard-of-hearing child concerning language assessment and development. Is familiar with technology related to deafness such as hearing aids and auditory training systems. Teaches other professionals and/or normally hearing students the visual system used by the deaf or hard-of-hearing student(s) in that particular school. Maintains appropriate physical health including rest periods and exercises for hands and arms. Demonstrates professional conduct as outlined in the Code of Ethics by the National Registry for Interpreters for the Deaf. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility. Works cooperatively and productively with supervisor(s) and other system staff to ensure the system’s vision, goals and strategies are implemented and providing all pertinent data to all appropriate personnel within the designated time frame. Engages in professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and effective leadership. Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel. Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner. Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervises and monitors others in the care, maintenance, and use of tools, equipment, and inventory. Uses effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures. Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).
Terms of Employment :
Nine-month position in accordance with the Board’s salary schedule.
