Freelance ASL Interpreter Bridge Language Services Altamonte Springs, FL 32714 • Hybrid work Job Overview We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Sign Language Interpreter to facilitate effective communication between hearing and deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals. The ideal candidate will possess a strong command of American Sign Language (ASL) and demonstrate the ability to interpret spoken language into sign language and vice versa. This role is essential in various settings, including educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and community events, ensuring that all participants can engage fully in conversations and activities. Duties Translate spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) for deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals. Interpret ASL back into spoken language for hearing individuals, maintaining the original message’s intent and tone. Communicate effectively with clients to understand their specific needs and preferences regarding interpretation. Collaborate with other professionals, such as educators or healthcare providers, to ensure clear communication during meetings or appointments. Stay updated on best practices in interpreting and maintain proficiency in ASL and other relevant languages if applicable. Adhere to ethical standards of interpreting, including confidentiality and impartiality. Qualifications Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is required; additional knowledge of other languages is a plus (bilingual or multilingual candidates are encouraged to apply). Strong understanding of linguistics and the nuances of both spoken and signed languages. Previous experience as a sign language interpreter in various settings is preferred but not mandatory. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal, with the ability to convey messages accurately. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
