Description Explore an exciting opportunity as a Court Service Specialist with the State Court Clerk’s office, where you can contribute to the efficient functioning of the court. Examples of Duties Under the direction of the Deputy Court Administrator, you Obtain and assign interpreters for court proceedings based on language needs and case type. Follow interpreter selection rules — prioritizing licensed interpreters from the official roster. Coordinate interpreter schedules and availability, adjusting as needed for cancellations, reschedules, or trial extensions. Maintain and update interpreter appointment records in our case management system, Odyssey. Ensure compliance with court policies on interpreter qualifications, conflicts of interest, and ethical standards. Secure Deaf Interpreters and teams when cases involve Deaf/Hard of Hearing individuals or special circumstances. Manage team interpreting arrangements for complex or lengthy hearings to ensure quality and avoid interpreter fatigue. Arrange relay interpreting services when no direct interpreter is available for a particular language. Pay interpreters by verifying service records and processing timely invoices according to court policy. Track outstanding interpreter invoices and monitor deadlines for submission and payment. Enforce cancellation policies — notify interpreters promptly and manage fees for late cancellations, especially for jury trials. Handle interpreter complaints or performance issues by reporting concerns to the State Court Administrator. Maintain good relationships with local interpreters and agencies while balancing fair distribution of appointments and budget limits. Respond to last-minute interpreter needs — using approved rosters, agencies, or court-approved ad hoc interpreters when necessary. Create interpreter schedules for trials based on defendant, witness, and case length requirements. Advise judges and staff when qualified interpreters are unavailable and recommend alternative options per court rules. Verify notice of interpreter needs from attorneys and update case records accordingly. Communicate clearly with all parties regarding interpreter assignments, changes, and expectations. Maintain, organize, and archive court records in accordance with established policies and retention schedules, and prepare records for long-term storage, including boxing, labeling, and cataloging files. Perform other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification. Minimum Qualifications Associate Degree in Criminal Justice, Political Science, Public Administration, Communications, or a closely related field; and At least one (1) year of related courtroom experience; or Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift approximately 35 lbs. Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Political Science, Public Administration, Communications, or a related field. During emergencies and disasters affecting Chatham County, you may be required to report to work as part of a disaster operations team. In accordance with the Department of Transportation, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders and those employed in safety-sensitive positions are subject to random drug testing. Candidates with direct and relevant experience may receive an offer of up to 10% above the minimum salary that is posted, reflecting their exceptional qualifications.
