REPORTS TO

Director of Special Education, Building Administrator(s)

PRIMARY FUNCTION

The Interpreter provides interpreting and/or transliterating services for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students in the educational environment. This environment includes classrooms, field trips, assemblies, counseling sessions, club meetings, extra-curricular activities, IEP meetings, and other educational settings.

CREDENTIALS

Quality Assurance Interpreting (QA-I) and Quality Assurance Transliteration (QA-T) Certification (minimum) Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) National Certification

QUALIFICATIONS

Must have an Associate Degree from a two year interpreting program or a Level I Interpreting Certificate.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

1) Provides expressive and voice interpreting (may include American Sign Language, a form of manually coded English; and/or oral interpreting) for D/HH students in the educational environment. Interprets during IEP team meetings and parent conferences. Confers with classroom teacher(s) and D/HH Itinerant Teacher in order to better prepare for interpreting services. Participates in educational team meetings for the purpose of reviewing progress of the Individual Education Program (IEP). Provides insight on the success of communication strategies. Checks hearing aids and FM monitors for proper function daily. Maintains an impartial attitude and professionalism. Guards confidentiality in accordance with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Ethics.
