Job Description

Category Schools – Sign Language Interpreter Job Type Contract In a dynamic educational environment, you will play a crucial role as a 1:1 Sign Language Interpreter. This position focuses on facilitating effective communication for a student who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing, ensuring their full access to the curriculum and social interactions throughout the school day.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide real-time interpretation of spoken English into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa during classroom instruction and school activities. Support the student in understanding class content, assignments, and social cues. Collaborate with educators and special education staff to tailor accommodations and instructional strategies to meet the student’s needs. Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality in accordance with educational guidelines. Actively participate in IEP meetings, contributing valuable insights regarding the student’s communication and educational access. Prepare for classroom content in advance to ensure effective and accurate interpretation. Foster the student’s independence and self-advocacy skills within the educational setting.

Qualifications:

Fluency in ASL; RID or EIPA certification accepted, with a minimum EIPA Score of 3.5. High school diploma or GED required; a degree in ASL Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or related field preferred. At least one year of experience working with school-aged children in an educational setting is strongly preferred. Strong understanding of Deaf culture and the unique educational needs of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to maintain professionalism and flexibility in a diverse and dynamic school environment.

Location:
