Job Description

Historic House Interpreter The Charleston Museum Charleston, SC 29403 The Charleston Museum is seeking part-time Historic House Interpreters who enjoy working with the public, have excellent customer service and public speaking skills, and are passionate about history. Qualified applicants will be excited to become a team member of America’s First Museum. Related experience and/or general knowledge of Lowcountry and Charleston history is preferred. 7 to 20 hours per week (the Museum cannot guarantee a minimum number of hours per week).

Primary responsibilities include:

Providing tours of the one of the Museum’s two National Historic Landmark homes, the Joseph Manigault House Distributing audio tour equipment to guests so they can take the self-guided tour of the Heyward-Washington House Assisting with daily opening and closing of the historic houses Greeting visitors, selling tickets and processing daily transactions using the point of sale system Ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications: College degree or working towards a degree in a related field. In lieu of this, applicants must have equivalent job experience and/or competence in local history preferred Strong communication skills Ability to interact effectively with the general public, including tour groups and individual visitors as well as Museum supporters, other staff, and volunteers Patience, flexibility and a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances Friendly, people-oriented disposition General knowledge of Charleston history and the periods of American history represented in the historic houses or eagerness and willingness to learn about these topics Neat, professional appearance

Pay Rate:

$15.00 – $16.00 per hour
