School-Based Sign Language Interpreter Job Summary:

We are seeking a qualified and dedicated Sign Language Interpreter to provide interpreting services for students in a school setting in Gaffney, SC. The ideal candidate will facilitate communication between Deaf or hard-of-hearing students and others, including teachers, peers, and staff, ensuring equal access to educational opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

Interpret classroom instruction, discussions, and activities using American Sign Language (ASL).
Collaborate with teachers and school staff to support the academic progress of students.
Adapt interpreting style to meet the needs of the students’ individual communication modes.
Assist in promoting Deaf culture awareness and understanding within the school community.
Provide support in various school settings, including classrooms, assemblies, and extracurricular activities.
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interpreting settings.

Qualifications:

Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
Certification from a recognized interpreting program (preferred but not required).
Prior experience in educational settings (K-12) is an advantage.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to adapt to the unique needs of each student.
Knowledge of Deaf culture and the challenges faced by Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in educational environments.
