General Summary:

The Spanish Interpreter enhances the success of non or limited English-speaking students by providing interpretation for Spanish speaking students, families, and staff. Extends district efforts to reach out to Spanish speaking families, students, staff, and the community; facilitates positive family and district-level communication.

Essential Functions:

Supports and upholds the mission, vision, and strategic goals of Richland County School District One.
Effectively interacts, communicates, and collaborates with all stakeholders.
Provides interpreting services in English and Spanish for parents, supports district communication and MLP needs from the district level, and other activities where communication is required in both English and Spanish.
Connects students and parents to district resources, district programs and extracurricular activities. Contacts outside community agencies for the purpose of seeking resources of communicating effectively on the behalf of the district.
Develops a working knowledge of district policies and procedures, including key personnel and district contacts. Provides information at the district level on such topics as student enrollment, registration, curriculum, assessment, discipline etc.
Contacts parents and families through phone calls, home visits, and meetings at the district and in schools to encourage participation in district activities and events. Receives parent and student calls for assistance in answering questions or making connections to correct school or district personnel.
Assists in planning and advertising district events. Follows up in scheduling conferences or meetings by phone, email, text or in person while keeping a log of communications for the district.
Interacts and interprets for divisions such as district staff, students, parents, and the general public
Attends training, conferences, workshops, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.
Operates a variety of office equipment, which may include computers, printers, copiers, facsimile machines, telephones, audio-visual equipment, etc. Willingly performs other duties as assigned or requested.

Minium Education/Work Experience:

Certification as a qualified interpreter through documentation of English and Spanish language proficiency.
To determine English proficiency a prospective interpreter/translator must either have graduated from high school OR attended and graduated from a college/university or graduate program in the United States. If the applicant is able to provide proof of their English proficiency, they must then pass the ACTFL assessments in Spanish that consist of speaking and listening.
To determine Spanish language proficiency a prospective interpreter/translator must either have graduated from high school in the country of language origin OR attended and graduated from any 4-year university or graduate program in the country of language origin. If the applicant is able to provide proof of their language proficiency, they must then pass the TOEFL assessments in English that consist of speaking, listening and reading, writing, and proficiency and performance.

Note:

TOEFL includes 4 sections (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) in one assessment.
Other comparable evidence of certification may be accepted.
Must possess a valid S.C. driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the school district which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Must be proficient in English and in Spanish, particularly in the areas of listening and speaking. Ability to accurately and effectively communicate oral communications, documents and written correspondence from Spanish to English and vice versa. Ability to learn and communicate the district’s organization, operations, policies, objectives, and goals. Excellent public speaking skills; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral, written, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to successfully perform clerical functions such as typing, filing, and sorting; ability to accurately collect, organize and maintain data and information for reports. Ability to maintain the strict confidentiality of student and family information. Ability to communicate in an effective and professional manner with supervisors, co-workers, teachers, parents, students, and all other stakeholders. Good organization, basic mathematical, and telephone skills. Ability to demonstrate high level application of technology devices in the performance of daily activities as appropriate. Ability to use general office equipment. Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

Physical Requirements:

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment, including a computer, office equipment, telephone, cleaning equipment, etc. Must be able to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Work involves sitting much of the time, but also involves driving, walking or standing for periods of time. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to twenty-five pounds.
