In collaboration with the Director, reviews and evaluates the provision of interpreting services throughout the system, plans and implements educational activities. Serves as the liaison for community outreach efforts for organizations that represent patients and families with Limited English Proficiency or Disabilities such as Visually Impaired, Deaf or Hard of Hearing, and collaborates with the Congregational Health Network in providing multi-cultural outreach for patient navigation. What you will do
Performs a variety of interpreting and translation services to assist Spanish-speaking patients and other patients with Limited English Proficiency or Disabilities that affect Communication receiving care at Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare.
Maintains confidentiality in all matters related to patients.
Maintains timely and accurate documentation of interpretation services performed.
Adheres to standard code of ethics for medical interpreters.
Assists Director in review and evaluation of various options for the provision of interpreting services throughout the system. Assists with the development of standard practices in medical interpreting to comply with the National Standards of Practice for Interpreters in Health Care.
Serves in an on-call capacity for interpreting needs; ensures on-call service is provided throughout the system for 24/7 availability.
Leads or participates on multi-disciplinary teams toward the execution and implementation of projects related to medical interpreting services.
Serves as resource for any department that provides service to limited or non-English speaking patients; provides information regarding Latino culture, issues and events. Educates staff about the Spanish cultures served and the impact of their beliefs and practices upon medical care.
In collaboration with the director, plans, implements and evaluates orientation, competency and educational needs for interpreters.
Informs the community about MLH services through community activities, clinical staff involvement, and promotional/educational events. Serves as liaison/representative of Methodist Healthcare to community-based organizations addressing the Latino community.
Collaborates with Marketing/Communications to develop materials for Latino-related marketing activities.
Collaborates with the Congregational Health Network to develop and implement a multicultural outreach program to assist with navigating the health care system.
Education Qualifications
Associate’s Degree Healthcare Services
Associate’s Degree

Preferred:

Bachelor’s Degree
Evidence of training as a medical interpreter as demonstrated by successful completion of MLH Candidate Assessment (Oral and Written). Basic training courses usually consist of 40 hours or more of course work (including classroom and practice).
Experience Qualifications
3-5 years Healthcare interpretation or translation
Skills and Abilities
Fluency in English and Spanish with knowledge and understanding of the culture of patients with Limited English Proficiency and Disabilities that impede communication
Demonstrated ability to serve as an interpreter with ability to speak, read, and write in Spanish and interpret/translate from the language to English and vice-versa.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with grammatical excellence demonstrated.
Basic proficiency in Word and Excel; Power Point desired.
Ability to work without close supervision and to exercise independent judgment.
Ability to maintain working relationships with physicians, directors, co-workers, and other Associates.
Ability to set priorities, organize and coordinate multiple tasks, and maintain control of workflow.
Demonstrated interest in advocating and serving patients and families from other cultures.
Ability to work effectively in situations of high stress and conflict.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Licenses and Certifications

Preferred:

Certified Medical Interpreter – National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters
Supervision Provided by this Position
There are lead responsibilities assigned to this position, but no supervisory responsibilities.
Physical Demands
The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
Must have good balance and coordination.
The physical requirements of this position are: light work – exerting up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently.
The Associate is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity, such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
The conditions to which the Associate will be subject in this position: The Associate is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions; job functions are typically performed under conditions such as those found in general office or administrative work.
Frequent travel to other hospitals in Memphis and Olive Branch.
