Job Summary The Medical Interpreter facilitates effective communication between patients with limited English proficiency and healthcare providers and staff. Serving in consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation modes, the interpreter supports departmental operations by relaying medical information accurately and efficiently while maintaining patient confidentiality and informed consent. This role requires continuous training in medical terminology, as well as proficiency in both the target and source languages. The interpreter assists in the delivery of services to linguistically diverse populations, explaining office protocols, resources, and limitations to patients, and providing culturally and linguistically appropriate guidance. Additionally, the interpreter makes referrals as necessary, contributing to successful patient outcomes. The position is vital to promoting teamwork and cooperation within the health center while adhering to policies on customer relations and hospitality and supporting the overall service delivery system. •Specifically, a

Knowledge of when to intervene as an intercultural mediator when communication is compromised by culture-bound messages.
Strong Interpreting skills:
Ability to explain the role of the interpreter to patient and provider
Ability to recognize the complexity of the clinical encounter and the added factor of linguistic barrier.
Ability to set the tone of the patient/provider encounter to manage spatial configuration and flow of communication to preserve accuracy and completeness, and to assess and address potential areas of discomfort for patient (age, gender of interpreter, no previous experience with interpreters).
Ability to encourage and foster direct communication between provider and patientAbility to maintain professional distance and integrity.
Ability to diffuse conflict between parties by remaining calm and impartial

Required Qualifications Education:
High School Diploma or GED.
Experience:
Minimum of (1) one year of experience working in a healthcare setting.
Language Proficiency:
Fluency in both English and Spanish, with strong oral and written communication skills in both languages.
Certification:
Proof of Professional Medical Interpreter Training Certification. Preferred Qualifications Experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMR): Prior experience with electronic medical records is strongly desired. Salary $22/hour — Up to 19 hours/week
