FM, East Tennessee’s trusted NPRmember station, licensed to the University of Tennessee and based in vibrantKnoxville, is seeking an inspiring and visionary News Director to help redefine what publicradio journalism can be. You’ll lead WUOT’s award-winning news team, a small but passionate group ofjournalists recognized for their excellence in reporting and deep commitment topublic service. Even more exciting, you’ll have the opportunity to expand and shape your team—bringing your editorial vision to life by recruiting, mentoring,and developing both emerging and established talent. You’ll also play a keyrole in training the next generation of journalists, working closely with CCI’sstudents to provide hands-on experience, professional mentorship, andmeaningful opportunities to contribute to impactful journalism.

As News Director, you will setthe editorial direction and guide your team in delivering stories that inform,inspire, and reflect the diverse voices of our region. You’ll make criticaleditorial decisions that prioritize depth, impact, and trust—and you’ll be asteadfast guardian of journalistic independence, ensuring our coverage remainsfree from outside influence.

WHATYOU’LL DO

Shape and executeWUOT’s editorial vision, strategy, policies, and priorities.

Direct and leadoverall efforts of the News Department and ensure that content is consistentwith the station’s mission, goals, and journalistic standards.

Responsible andaccountable for the overall quality and performance of the station’s news content.

Direct daily newscoverage and lead planning for major news events including elections,legislative sessions, or breaking stories.

Recruitsand manages student interns.

Understand andincorporate deep knowledge of the area’s community neighborhoods, issues, andother special characteristics to direct coverage and story selection.

Developstrategies for implementing journalism that reaches diverse audiences andintegrate new and historically underrepresented viewpoints.

Collaborate with theleadership team regarding WUOT’s online and digital strategy.

Seek out and leadnews collaboration efforts with other stations, student media organizations,and other non-profit organizations.

Supervise thenewsroom, including editors, reporters, and producers.

Assign projectsor stories and ensure that deadlines are met.

Develop newsroomstaff by coaching, training, and providing growth opportunities.

Critique and editcontent to enhance stories, assuring reporters/editors include multipleperspectives while maintaining accuracy, objectivity, and adherence to WUOT’sjournalistic standards.

Participatesin on-air fundraising and community events as needed.

Passion for and experience with public broadcasting Knowledge of Knoxville and East Tennessee – the people, music, cultures, issues, and geography. Knowledge of FCC guidelines and requirements

RequiredEducation and Experience:

Minimum of five (5) years ofexperience in news/journalism; bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications,or related field preferred. Equivalent education/experience considered.

RequiredSkills:

Excellentinterpersonal and oral/written communication skills.

Self-starter withexcellent project management skills to deliver high-quality results underpressure and tight deadlines.

Demonstratedproblem-solving and analytical abilities.

Demonstratedproficiency in electronic news gathering and audio editing, news writing, andbroadcast production strongly desired.

Have a validdriver’s license and insurance.

Strong teamplayer committed to working with department and station colleagues to achievecollective goals.
