Full Job Description Overview:

WRAL is looking for a News Producer 2, which is an entry way for a growing journalist striving to produce news on all WRAL platforms. Producer 2 assists in the creation and execution of newscasts and news content in a variety of ways, to include: assisting news producers, producing newscasts, and handling duties at the assignment desk. This position lays the foundation for a successful newscast producer at WRAL.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Collaboration:

Work closely with producers, reporters, anchors, editors, and other newsroom staff to ensure cohesive and comprehensive news coverage.

News Production Support:

Creating rundowns, writing scripts, selecting/ downloading video, and, building graphics.

Assignment Desk Support:

Listen to scanners, dispatch crews to breaking news, make calls to confirm information from law enforcement & other agencies, disseminate confirmed information to the staff, and field phone calls.

Story Development:

Research and gather information for news stories. Assist in development & research, ensuring all content is accurate, balanced, and compelling.

Script Writing:

Ability to write clear, concise, accurate, and, engaging copy for broadcast & digital platforms. Ability to construct effective teases to keep viewers engaged & interested in our content. Ensure all scripts meet WRAL’s style and editorial guidelines.

Video and Graphics:

Select video and/or build graphics to enhance visual storytelling.

Additional tasks may include:

logging video and managing archives.

Field Coordination:

Communicate and coordinate with reporters and photographer to ensure clear expectations of coverage plan.

Rundown Management:

Ability to add, subtract, and refresh elements in a rundown. Ability to manage a rundown in the control room, to include back-timing a newscast.

Digital Content:

Assist in producing content for the station’s website and social media platforms. Write articles, post videos, and engage with the audience online.

Breaking News:

Assist with a rapid response to breaking news events. Gathering information, writing scripts, and, updating rundowns in real-time.

Required Qualifications:
Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field.

Experience:

Minimum of one year in a newsroom environment, preferably in a writing or production role. Internship experience will be considered.

Skills:

Strong writing and editing skills Knowledge of AP style Exceptional tease writer Basic knowledge of news production software and systems Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines Time management Strong communication and collaborator

Preferred Qualifications:

Passion for news and journalism. High ethical standards and integrity. Detail Oriented Flexibility to work irregular hours, including nights, overnights, weekends and holidays.

Physical Demands:

Capability Capacity to stand for extended periods of time. Able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds boxes. Perform physical tasks such as bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling. Close vision and ability to differentiate colors.

Work Conditions:

Fast paced office environment setting Standing, sitting, walking for extended periods of time.
