The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
Funded in part by the Delacorte Center/New York Community Trust, the incumbent will play a lead role in covering the media industry. Whether it is profiling emerging players in the field, unearthing important news, or exploring the dynamics reshaping newsrooms, this reporter will become a dominant voice of CJR.
Responsibilities
Produce a regular stream of high-impact pieces—at least one per week—that help to define the rapid changes taking place in journalism. These should possess a combination of rigorous reporting and trenchant analysis. Write regularly about the news, producing original reporting that keeps CJR in the public discussion around journalism.
Subjects include:
Suppression of press freedom in the United States and abroad; misinformation, disinformation, censorship, and reporting in exile; news business models at the local, national, and international levels; systems of power and labor in the journalism industry, and how that intersects with big tech; emerging forms of journalism, or news delivery; journalism ethics and media literacy.
Be a leader in developing coverage plans for CJR through regular participation in newsroom discussions on coverage. Be present in the office, consistent with our hybrid schedule.
Contribute across CJR’s platforms, with news coverage, analysis, enterprise reporting, scene writing, investigations, newsletters, and other multimedia storytelling as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent related experience required. Minimum of 3-5 years related experience. Experience producing well-written and reported magazine-style writing. Strong knowledge of the media industry, including a facile understanding of the trends and personalities. Analytical skills and a proven ability to juggle multiple stories and tasks. Strong knowledge and comfort working in the digital space, including an already established and robust social media presence.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience as a reporter for well-regarded media outlets, nationally or regionally.
A demonstrated ability to produce stories at a fast pace, as well as work that was more deeply reported.
