Laura Rawson, Personnel Manager, lrawson@mdah.ms.gov About the Position The Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) seeks an exhibits construction assistant to serve in the Museum Division. This team member plays a key role in building, installing, maintaining, and transporting museum exhibits. The assistant constructs specialized exhibit components, including museum-quality platforms, cases, crates, and signs, and fabricates custom artifact mounts in coordination with the collections section to meet professional standards. They manage or support gallery preparation and take an active role in exhibit installation and deinstallation. The assistant also maintains existing exhibits and collaborates with MDAH museum sites to address exhibit-related needs. They perform routine maintenance within museum spaces, manage contracts with outside vendors, ensure adequate supplies for construction and maintenance, and oversee all aspects of traveling exhibits, including reservations and upkeep. They also catalog and maintain the department’s prop collection. The assistant works with curatorial staff to develop ideas for temporary, traveling, and permanent exhibits. They contribute to content development as needed, may manage exhibit projects, and perform other duties as assigned. What you’ll need to be Successful The ideal candidate should have expertise in general construction, carpentry, and painting; be capable of lifting heavy loads exceeding 50 lbs.; be comfortable working on ladders and lifts; and demonstrate strong organizational skills in a fabrication workshop.
