As a member of the creative and dynamic exhibits team, the Exhibit Maintenance Specialist plays a key role in ensuring that all exhibits remain safe, functional, and well-maintained for our guests. This hands-on position is responsible for maintaining and repairing exhibit components using materials such as wood, plastic laminate, metal, and other creative fabrication media. The role requires a broad skillset in construction, mechanical repair, and basic electronics, as well as the ability to troubleshoot a wide variety of technical and structural issues. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with staff across teams are essential. The Exhibit Maintenance Specialist must demonstrate a willingness to stay current with evolving exhibit technologies, repair techniques, and work resourcefully within defined budgets and operational constraints. All museum staff are expected to cooperate with one another in furthering the museum’s general objectives and in completing museum projects. Essential Duties:

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. + Evaluate and conduct exhibit maintenance as needed, including identifying exhibit maintenance needs, troubleshooting exhibit interactive components, fabricating and replacing parts as necessary, and performing routine maintenance and repairs of exhibit-related interactives, fixtures, and components, including gallery electronics. + Respond to delegated tasks through the exhibit maintenance ticketing system and confer with museum team members to determine timing of exhibit maintenance and repair activities. + Perform wall repairs, patching, and painting in museum galleries including touch up painting, blending, and faux artistic repairs as required. + Use appropriate tools and equipment for maintenance of exhibit components including measuring, cutting, shaping, and assembling materials with a variety of hand and power tools. While working above ground level, use ladders and operate lifts. + Ensure efficient and safe operation of machinery and equipment by completing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairing or reporting equipment malfunctions as needed. + Procure and maintain inventory of painting supplies and maintenance materials in adherence to the museum’s procurement policy and team budgetary requirements in consultation with the AVP for Exhibits. + Attend exhibit team meetings, staff training sessions as required. + Assist with fabrication, installation, and maintenance tasks for both permanent and traveling exhibits. + Contribute to the upkeep of exhibit spaces, production areas, and storage in accordance with museum safety and cleanliness standards. + Participate on project teams and museum committees as assigned. + Foster positive, cooperative communication with internal teams, external partners, and museum guests. + Remain current with industry trends, best practices, and innovations in related exhibit fields. + Engage in the museum’s annual review process to set and achieve performance goals that align with the organization’s strategic objectives. + Recommend and support improvements to processes, exhibit development, and technologies that enhance the visitor experience. + Complete all tasks with strict adherence to all internal and OSHA safety guidelines, policies, and procedures in compliance with all federal, state and local laws. + Have lots of fun with a one-of-a-kind team that never stops playing!

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The candidate may have any combination of education and experience but should possess the required skills and knowledge for successful performance.

Our general minimum requirements are:

+ High school diploma or trade school certification. + Experience in woodworking, metalworking, construction or contracting, or related field. + Experience with preparing, finishing, and painting walls and other surfaces. Experience with faux finishing and various types of interior paints and coatings. + Basic understanding of wiring and simple low voltage electrical systems. + Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license. + Experience working with a broad set of tools and systems. Ability to read and interpret schematics, use a variety of measuring tools and equipment, and use basic mathematical operations. Proficient in the proper use of power and hand tools, and of all wood-working tools and milling equipment. Ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine to exact positions. + Things don’t always go as planned. This job requires the ability to understand and follow instructions while recognizing, analyzing, and solving a variety of problems. + Capacity to change. Ability to identify and correct problems quickly. Anticipates and responds to changes in a professional and courteous manner. + Must possess a strong outcome-oriented work ethic and ability to meet quality standards for services. These qualifications are considered a plus: + Associate’s degree, certificate, or equivalent coursework in Theatrical Production/Stagecraft, Scenic Art, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Construction Technology. + Certifications in OSHA 10/30, forklift or aerial lift operation, or powered pallet jacks.
