Department A&O Shearman is a full-service global law firm advising the world’s leading companies on a wide range of matters focused on technology and intellectual property. The firm’s IP Litigation practice provides legal services to household names in their most complex matters, including patent litigation and trade secrets disputes. Our practice litigates in the ITC, the PTAB, the Federal Circuit and district courts. We have successfully litigated hundreds of patent cases in key patent venues, including California, Texas, Delaware, New York and Pennsylvania, with a half dozen trials in the last 18 months. Clients include leaders such as eta (f/k/a Facebook), Google, Block and Walmart. Role Purpose The Science & Technical Advisor provides the technical insight and clarity necessary for effective advocacy and decision-making in IP litigation, ultimately helping the legal team achieve the best possible outcomes for their clients. They serve as the technical expert, ensuring that complex scientific or technological issues are accurately understood, analyzed, and communicated throughout the litigation process. This role is essential because IP litigation—especially patent disputes—often centers on highly specialized subject matter that attorneys and courts may not be familiar with. The advisor provides in-depth technical analysis, translates intricate technical concepts, helps shape legal strategy, and ensures effective communication among all parties involved. Role & Responsibilities Reviewing patents, technical documents, and scientific literature to understand the technology at issue. Identifying, collecting, and analyzing technical evidence relevant to IP litigation matters. Explaining complex technical concepts in clear, accessible language for attorneys, judges, and juries, enabling informed legal arguments and decisions. Analyzing accused products or processes to assess potential infringement or non-infringement. Reviewing and interpreting technical documents produced by opposing parties. Preparing written summaries, presentations, and visual aids to communicate technical issues during litigation. Advising attorneys on the strengths and weaknesses of technical arguments and assisting in the development of legal theories and strategies based on technical facts. Identifying key technical issues that may impact cases’ outcomes. Assisting with the preparation of discovery requests and responses related to technical matters. Assisting in the selection and retention of expert witnesses, preparing them for depositions and trial testimony, and reviewing and critiquing expert reports and testimony from both sides. Acting as a liaison between the legal team and external technical experts, inventors, or clients, and facilitating communication to ensure all parties have a consistent understanding of the technical facts. Assisting attorneys during depositions, hearings, and trial by providing real-time technical input. Will be expected to appear in court for such matters on a case-by-case basis. Helping to develop demonstrative exhibits and other materials for use in court. The actual base salary offered will depend on the overall qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, including, if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job, and other job-relation factors permitted by law.
