Primary duties/responsibilities include, but are not limited, to the following: Draft talking points, remarks, speeches, and prepare materials for senior leadership at the department. Research and write articles, brochures, press releases, blogs, feature-style articles, PowerPoints, and other materials as needed for departmental messaging as directed by the Deputy Communications Director. Edit publications and press releases for various sections and divisions as needed as well as work on special projects, events and commemorative events. The role of the executive writer is vital to help ensure consistent and accurate messaging and that senior department leadership and the agency as a whole are communicating to the public and responding to the media appropriately. About the Division The NC Department of Public Safety’s Communications Office is responsible for communication with the media and the public. This involves but is not limited to making the public or stakeholders aware of programs and managing media inquiries. The section also manages the web site and is responsible for developing, maintaining, and dissemination of brochures, pamphlets, and other forms of publications to stakeholders. Section manages the perception and branding of DPS, responds to public records requests, and coordinates response to Emergency/Disaster events. The Communications Office is responsible for the development, coordination and implementation of communications strategies and initiatives that advance the department’s mission and support internal and external stakeholders’ awareness of and understanding of the Department’s policies and functions. Included in these responsibilities are the management of crisis communications, data and records requests and state/national and international media inquiries. With thousands of employees and multiple law enforcement services and emergency services for disasters, the daily attention on the department is immense. That attention may come from the media, a legislator, a family member or citizen. Many of these issues do not rise to the level of executive management, but many of them do and their tentacles may overlap to reach multiple internal and external stakeholders. The role of the Communications Office is to help ensure that there is consistent and accurate messaging and that all divisions/sections involved are communicating and responding appropriately.
