NATURE OF JOB
Under general supervision, performs a variety of activities in support of the library’s basic reading competency and English as a Second Language (ESL) program for adults. Supervises and trains volunteer literacy tutors, provides literacy tutoring, and manages program-related data collection and reporting. Coordinates the Career Online High School program for the Northwest Regional Library System.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Provides direction, training, orientation, and guidance to adult volunteer tutors; prepares weekly schedules; evaluates performance; assists in recruiting volunteers. Observes tutors and ensures compliance with training requirements and program goals.
Assists with new student registration, orientation, and placement.
Assists in development of curriculum and prepares lessons and other instructional materials to meet individual needs of volunteer tutors and students considering educational levels and English proficiency.
Confers with volunteer tutors to develop individualized educational programs for students.
Participates in individual and group activities to improve competencies in basic reading and/or English-as-a-second language.
Participates in workshops to train volunteer tutors in methods of teaching basic reading and/or English-as-a-second language.
Evaluates and records progress of students using tests and interviews.
Collects and reports attendance statistics to library administration.
Participates in professional meetings, education conferences, and training workshops to stay abreast of best practices in adult literacy and ESL education.
Informs volunteers of policies, procedures, and standards of volunteer service.
Coordinates the Career Online High School program for the Northwest Regional Library System; provides information about the program, conducts interviews with potential students, awards student scholarships, and plans and participates in graduation ceremonies.
Promotes goodwill through publicity efforts such as speeches, tours and programs. Represents the library at community, social, and business gatherings.
Assists in other branch departments as assigned.
Regular reliable attendance as scheduled.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Must have good interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.
Understands methods and practices of adult instruction and tutoring.
Ability to maintain good communication with tutors and students to address questions and concerns.
Outstanding project management and organizational skills.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Proficiency in the use of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook is essential. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals and professional journals. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, library staff, volunteers, and the general public. Ability to perform responsible administrative support work with accuracy, speed, and minimal supervision.
Ability to speak effectively to groups.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions.
Ability to distinguish colors displayed on computer screen for interpretation to library customers and other staff and for technical support of computer systems, have sufficient peripheral vision to determine presence of library customers in the service area, and be able to adjust focus for close vision of computer monitor and distant vision for customers at the circulation desk and in book stacks and reading areas. Ability to type; experience with word processing; knowledge of basic computer operations, including use of mouse.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Work is primarily performed in an indoor, climate-controlled environment and has moderate exposure to disagreeable elements (e.g., irate customer, extreme noise, heat, odors, heights and/or dust). This position requires stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, visual acuity (i.e. seeing up close, seeing far away, depth perception), kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement, repetitive motions. Frequent lifting 10 to 25 pounds; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. Employee must be able to push or pull a loaded two-sided, six shelf book cart. Employee must occasionally retrieve library materials by climbing and/or reaching to top shelves of standard 84″ library shelving and stooping to floor-level shelves of library shelving and bottom drawers of file cabinets.
