3-98145 Landscape Architecture Lecturer Position, One-Year The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: We believe that achieving next-generation scientific breakthroughs requires an understanding of the world’s complex, interlocking systems. We believe that access to nutritious food and a healthy environment is a fundamental human right. We believe that ensuring a prosperous global future depends on the ability to support local people and communities everywhere. By working in and across multiple scientific areas, CALS can address challenges and opportunities of the greatest relevance, here in New York, across the nation, and around the world. Over its 115-year history, Cornell’s Department of Landscape Architecture has achieved national recognition for its excellence in innovative teaching pedagogies that challenge students to become responsible, engaged and creative designers. Our department is adapting to meet the critical issues affecting the planet and its inhabitants through a continued emphasis on the agency of design. Position Function The Department of Landscape Architecture at Cornell University seeks applications for a one-year lecturer position to begin Fall, 2025. This position requires the candidate to have teaching and/or professional practice experience in high-quality contemporary design and the ability to teach design studios grounded in the historical and theoretical foundations of the field. In addition to undergraduate and graduate studio teaching, the candidate will be expected to have expertise and interest in at least one other area that will allow them to teach workshops, seminars, or technical courses. These courses will contribute to a curriculum that aims to prepare skilled and critical practitioners and researchers and expand the role of landscape architecture in addressing pressing anthropogenic issues. We seek faculty with innovative professional and/or teaching experience who can contribute to the development of a systematic cultural and ecological foundation for the design of environments. The lecturer will be responsible for all aspects of the courses they are assigned to teach, including holding office hours and grading. Anticipated Division of Time The lecturer will be responsible for two graduate or undergraduate design studios, one per semester, along with two seminars or technical courses, also one per semester. The lecturer will be expected to assist with department service roles as needed (serving on committees, etc.). The anticipated division of time is 90% teaching, 10% department service. The lecturer will not have formal advisees assigned to them; however, students will expect to get informal advice on job searches and internship opportunities. Requirements A Master’s degree (MLA) or Ph.D. in Landscape Architecture is required. Prior teaching experience is desirable but not required. Holding a valid driver’s license for course field trips is desirable but not required. Supervision Exercised The lecturer may supervise undergraduate and/or graduate teaching/course assistants.
