About the Position
This is a time limited NS-14 position. The Mississippi Department of Archives and History is seeking a local government records specialist to serve in Archives and Records Services. This position is assigned to the Local Government Records Office, advising and assisting local governments throughout the state in records management. Primary responsibilities of this position include providing onsite consultations and developing guidelines for local governments on records management, continuity of operations, and disaster preparedness training; working with the Local Government Records Officer to help increase the active participation among local governments in the records management program; assisting in administering the annual Local Government Records Grant Program to counties and possibly to municipalities in the future; conducting presentations, meetings, and outreach activities with local officials; providing records management and emergency preparedness training; researching and developing records control schedules; and providing records management guidance and assistance by phone, email or in-person.
What you’ll need to be Successful
Knowledge of records management or archives principles; willingness to learn new information skills; and the ability to work with a diverse variety of people in local government offices. The ability to lift and carry boxes weighing up to forty pounds; willingness to work with dirty records. Knowledge of Mississippi history; excellent time management, and written and oral communication skills; demonstrated organizational and analytical abilities; the ability to carry out detail-oriented projects, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member.
Preferred Qualifications
Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 2-4 years of experience.
Agency preferred qualifications:
A Master’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in history, library science, or a related field; A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in history, library science, or a related field; and one year of related experience to the above-described duties; demonstrated familiarity with current records management and archival theory, methods, and practice; working knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SQL; experience with municipal and county records management. Overnight travel and a valid driver’s license will be required.
