Primary Purpose of Position:
The Records Description Unit of the Government Records Section seeks a Digital Government Records Description Archivist to serve as a specialist in arranging and describing born-digital content. The position is responsible for providing a wide range of archival services such as: appraising records for archival value;
performing preservation actions on born-digital records;
processing records of all formats (including analog and audiovisual records);
increasing access by producing descriptive metadata;
providing timely and accurate reference services for processed and unprocessed collections;
researching and applying confidentiality statutes to restricted materials.
The archivist collaborates with other description archivists to incorporate digital records processing into their workflows and works directly with the Digital Services Section to ensure the seamless transition of born-digital and digitized records from creating agencies to the digital repository. Occasional Saturday work in the Archives’ Public Services Unit (Search Room) required. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Coordinating processing of born-digital archival public records, including oversight of project progress and creating and managing data in the archival content management system (AXAEM).
Performing preservation actions with born-digital records, including working with the Digital Services Section to create best practices for digital records management and access.
Regularly arranging and describing records of all formats, focusing primarily on born-digital records but also occasionally arranging and describing analog and audiovisual records.
Providing timely and accurate reference services for born-digital records.
Researching and applying confidentiality statutes to restricted materials.
Position/Physical Requirements:
Must be able to work Monday-Friday, 8:00-5:00, with no more than two days telework per week. Must be able to occasionally work Saturday in the Archives’ Public Services Unit (Search Room). Ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team environment. Ability to perform and coordinate multiple concurrent work assignments and functions.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to: Demonstrated experience or extensive training in the arrangement and description (processing) of digital records.
Demonstrated experience in and understanding of historical and current digital storage methods, preservation, and the current and long-range impact of all types of storage systems.
Demonstrated experience attained through work experience and/or academic coursework, assisting patrons and/or staff in solving varied, complex, and non-routine problems in using technology, resources, and/or facilities.
Management Prefers:
Demonstrated experience in applying DACS or Dublin Core metadata standards. Demonstrated experience in implementing, or extensive training in, ISO 14721 (Open Archival Information System reference model). Demonstrated experience in implementing, or extensive training in, ISO 16363 (Trusted Digital Repository Standard for preservation). Demonstrated experience with the management of government records and the application of confidentiality provisions in providing access to government records. Master’s degree in history, public history, library and information science, or a related discipline from an appropriately accredited institution AND one year of progressive experience in archives and/or records management; OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Supplemental and Contact Information Section/Unit Description:
The primary purpose of the Records Description Unit is to administer the arrangement and description program for state and local government records that have been transferred to the State Archives per established retention and disposition schedules. There are five arrangement and description archivists assigned to this unit. Some of the steps necessary to carry out this important and mandate are to inventory and appraise public records; to develop schedules that designate the records that have permanent retention; to transfer permanently valuable records to the State Archives; to process, arrange, and describe state and local records of enduring value; and to create finding aids for these records. The staff of the unit also helps formulate guidelines and policies regarding records creation, media, storage and preservation of state and local government records with permanent value and provide workshops on records management practices, essential records, identification, and disaster preparedness.
