Description Do you enjoy engaging with community members of all ages to help them imagine and create? Do you have a passion for and background in ceramics? Cary’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources department is seeking a Ceramics Instructor to join our team at The Cary Arts Center! The ideal candidate is a proactive, energetic, encouraging, and nurturing. They also have a knack for problem solving and considerable experience teaching and serving a community ceramics studio. Responsibilities include teaching youth & adult clay classes, loading/unloading kilns, help maintaining glazes, and other duties required for running a clean and safe studio. This position will function as part of a team who are focused on providing some instruction in ceramic techniques while primarily assisting with overall studio work-flow, and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment This position requires a flexible schedule to work varying hours with daytime availability required and some evenings and weekends as needed. This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year. Typical Tasks Works with Program Coordinator to propose, plan, and teach classes for designated ages and skill-levels
Works with Program Coordinator and other staff to outline and perform daily studio tasks
Works with the Program Coordinator or other staff to make supply requests for classes and the studio
Loads, unloads, and fires kilns both electric and gas
Engages with studio members to help troubleshoot problems
Maintains a safe, clean, and organized work and learning environment
Troubleshoots and performs basic equipment maintenance
Assists with inventory processes
Sets up and takes down classroom equipment and supplies as necessary
Uses classroom management skills to maintain behavior and engage all participants in lessons
Perform other job/studio-related tasks as required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Considerable knowledge of ceramics medium and relevant instructional techniques
Considerable knowledge of studio-specific safety requirements and procedures
Ability to remain organized and multitask
Ability to pay attention to small details
Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public; verbally and in writing
Ability to deal with the public (from youth to adult) in a firm but tactful manner
Ability to acquire knowledge of policies, procedures and services of the facility, division and department.
Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and lift up to 50lbs unassisted Minimum and Preferred Qualifications Education and Experience Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in an art-related field. Requires a minimum of 3 years of experience working with clay. Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following: Some experience teaching group clay classes.
Some experience working in a community clay studio
Some experience teaching youth. Physical Requirements Work in this class requires an employee to be able to hear and talk in order to communicate with the public and with groups under instruction. An employee must be able to climb, walk unassisted and move about freely in order to interact with patrons. Requires the ability to lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) Visual acuity is needed to read typewritten and handwritten materials and to view a computer terminal. Work in this class may require sitting and use of a computer. Work in this role requires the ability to work in a hot environment and around hot equipment. It also requires wearing a fitted respirator, ear protection, and eye protection when performing certain tasks.
