DESCRIPTION

To develop in each student an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual terms, utilizing skills and techniques of artistic expression appropriate to the students’ interests and abilities; to develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations; to discover and develop talents in students in the field of art.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and

EXPERIENCE

Rhode Island Teaching Certifications required: All Grades Art Teacher, Grades PK-12Evidence of developing teaching strategies that will address the unique needs of each student;Ability to know and utilize technology in the teaching and learning process;Demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities below as evidenced by course work, educational experience, teaching experience, and the interview process.

Ability to organize time and resources.

Demonstrated skill in working with at-risk learners.

Demonstrated skill in working collaboratively with colleaguesDemonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities below as evidenced by course work, educational experience, school-level involvement, and/or professional activities, and the interview process. Any such alternatives to the above qualifications, education, and/or experience as the committee may deem appropriate.

Successful completion of the Science of Reading Training

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities and duties for classroom Art teacher: Teaches knowledge and skills in art, including crafts, drawing, painting, lettering, design, commercial art, art history, three-dimensional art, and other appropriate learning activities;Provides instruction by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art;Demonstrates techniques in activities, such as drawing and painting, utilizing standard and teacher-prepared instructional materials;Develops instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and working time;Provides individual and group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to meet the individual needs of students;Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive studio environment;Instructs students in proper use and care of tools and equipment;Evaluates each student’s performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings and prepares progress reports and portfolios as necessary;Plans and presents art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students’ work for the school and community;Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss progress and interpret the school program;Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards and interest centers;Maintains professional competence through inservice education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities;Selects and requisitions books and instructional materials and maintains required inventory records;Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day;Demonstrates an understanding of standards-based education and how it is implemented in the classroom;Participates in curriculum development programs as required;Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Principal and/or designee at Thompson Middle School.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Ten-month position; appropriate salary/benefits in accordance with the Teachers Contract. Evaluation in accordance with the process as established by the Rhode Island Department of Education for certified educators.
