POSITION TITLE

Special Education Teacher

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution Valid certification in special education Such alternatives or additional qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, and goals. Assesses student needs and develops an individual education program (IEP)/504 plan for students with disabilities; monitors and updates IEPs/504 plans as needed. Implements developmentally appropriate instructional strategies. Trains and supervises teacher assistants for students with disabilities. Cooperates with other professionals to coordinate services for students. Assists teachers with the implementation of appropriate classroom accommodations/modifications. Assists individual students and/or teachers with the use of assistive technology/adaptive devices. Assists with the coordination of the local school process for the identification and referral of students for special education services. Maintains/monitors records of students served by the instructional support team. Serves as a team member in determining student accommodations, referral, eligibility, placement, and individual program development. Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner. Complies with local, state, and federal regulations regarding Special Education records, reports, and services. Cooperates with teachers, counselors, therapists, and other school personnel in the provision of effective educational services to students. Maintains frequent and substantive communication with parents. Cooperates in all teacher regulations and responsibilities in the local school/system. Adheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other like directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws. Has knowledge of appropriate assessment and testing techniques of students with multiple disabilities. Develops service delivery models, which match state and local objectives in accordance with student needs. Provides services that may include technical/medical interventions, as well as developmentally appropriate learning activities. Consults with classroom teachers, school personnel, service providers, and medical personnel in planning, delivering, and evaluating interventions that positively impact the developmental needs of the student. Engages in professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and leadership. Demonstrates proficiency in written and oral communication, organization, and collaborative skills. Has the ability to perform strenuous physical tasks, such as lifting and carrying children. Participates in transition planning and preparation for adult life experiences. Implements appropriate environment and behavior management strategies. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
EVALUATION:

Nine-month position in accordance with the Board’s salary schedule. Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Tarrant city Board of Education policy on evaluation of certified personnel. This is an exempt position.
