Adjunct Faculty Job Summary The Department of Literature and Language at East Tennessee State University seeks qualified instructors to fill part-time positions teaching courses in American Sign Language. The successful candidates’ primary duties will be to teach beginning and intermediate courses in ASl. These are temporary positions, filled on a semester-by-semester basis with some opportunity for renewal; positions do not include benefits. Demonstrated commitment to student success, active learning, and community engagement, in particular with the deaf community.
Demonstrated ability to use a Learning Management System and other web-based instructional technology to facilitate student learning inside and outside of the classroom.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in American Sign Language (ASL), Deaf Studies, Sign Language Education, Linguistics, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
OR
Bachelor’s degree in one of these fields with documented evidence of significant teaching experience and/or relevant certification.
Demonstrated fluency in ASL. Acceptable evidence may include an ASLPI rating of 3+/4, an SLPI rating of Advanced, or a teaching demonstration submitted with the application materials.
Preferred Qualifications
Native or near-native fluency in ASL.
American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) certification.
Evidence of having passed a state-level ASL performance exam.
ASLPI score of 4+ or ALPI score of Advanced Plus.
At least 2 years experience teaching ASL in a post-secondary setting.
